South Dakota State University does not offer a major in Accounting. However, it does offers a minor in Accounting. Is there any difference? Should I look at other universities?, since a major in Accounting is not offered.
If your goal is to become a CPA, then talk to the school and make sure the minor will qualify you to sit for the CPA exam.
At least make sure the minor qualifies you for the classes that masters programs require, that’s if it doesn’t already set you up for the CPA. If it doesn’t do either then consider other universities.
Look to the state board of CPAs to see what classes are required in SD. In general, if you want to become a CPA I’d focus on schools which have accounting as a major. I’d call the department chair and and ask some of these questions (some you may be able to research yourself:)
-
Is there a business school at South Dakota State U where you can take the non-accounting business classes required for most CPAs (ex. finance, business law, information systems…)?
-
Does the accounting minor program offer enough classes to at least qualify you for masters in accounting programs?
-
Does the school offer a masters in accounting? (Most states now require 150 credits to become a CPA and many students go on for a one year masters degree.)
-
Are students with an accounting minor recruited for internships at accounting firms?
-
What do students with an accounting minor typically do after graduation? (jobs? grad school? do they pursue careers as a CPA?).
