accounting

does anyone know which schools are best for accounting and/or finance. i tried looking it up but i couldnt find anything helpful. if anyone has any info it would be really helpful.

From experience, Wharton (UPenn) has an outstanding accounting dept. Top accounting programs listed under the 2006 USNews undergrad edition are:
1. U Illinois Urbana
2. U Texas Austin
3. U Penn (Wharton)
4. U Michigan
5. U Southern Cal

I'd suspect that there are respectable undergrad acct'g departments at all of the universities w/ top B-schools, e.g., Harvard, Stanford, MIT, Wharton, UC Berkeley, U Chicago, Columbia, Northwestern, Duke, Cornell and many more.

For finance, USNews rankings are (again, I presume this is undergrad):
1. Penn....Wharton
2. NYU...Stern
3. U Michigan
4. UC Berkeley
5. U Texas Austin

Harvard does not have undergraduate business and, therefore, should not have an accounting department. MIT also does not offer any accounting courses beyond the introctory financial and managerial courses (which don't count for the CPA exam). If you want to go into accounting, you really need to go to a place that offers an accounting concentration or major. I highly recommend going somehwere that incorporates a good general business curriculum into your major if you major in accounting, as it will help you a lot in your career.

Accounting and finance can lead to very different career paths, and your school's location may play a major role in job availability. It would be easier to help you if you told us what kind of work you are interested in. If you're not sure, do a search (at the very least through some of the threads I've posted on), as there is some information on here. You might want to reference http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?p=1329000#post1329000.

In terms of specific schools, I can only really speak for Boston/Boston-area schools at this point. For accounting: BC, BU and Bentley. For finance, Harvard, MIT, BU, BC, Bentley.

I'd like to add:

When people ask school recommendations on these message boards, every seems to just copy and paste rankings list. Those rankings are a terrible way to select a school--they tend to use very poor methods and measures. You really need to research and get to know the actual programs at these schools!

ryanbis-- as someone who routinely pastes lists, the intent is to BEGIN the shopping process, not use the lists "to select a school"....many folks on this board are not as familiar with all the various rankings nor aware of what is out there, hence, the lists are somewhere to start. There is absolutely NO intent from list providers like me to suggest that a list is what you need to select a school, but it is a good way IMO to start the shopping & reseach process for those new to it.
