On my ACT English, I received:

Usage/Mechanics- 18/18
Rhetorical Skills- 15/18

Sadly, that only gave me a 33. I wish I could superscore sub-sub sections, try to get an 18/18 rhetoric, then get a 36 for that section, but unfortunately the daunting world of standardized tests doesn't work that way.

Any tips on rhetoric? I won't settle for less than a 36.

Read the entire question first. Figure out what it’s really asking. For example, if you see “positive…”, pick a positive answer. Or, if you see "most specific… ", pick an answer that is really specific.
I had the exact same sub scores: 18 in mechanical and 15 in rhetorical skills. I think it ultimately boils down to reading the passage carefully and closely examining the questions and given options. I’m retaking the test this month and definitely want to improve as well.
