ACT, More Reading Orientated?

I don't know if it's a myth or not, but a few of my teachers and counselors have said that if you're better in math, take the SAT, and ACT if you're stronger in reading. Is it sorta/kinda/maybe true?

cough My first SAT score 1540, math was a 400, which I compensated with my reading and writing. The absolute shame. However, I just took the Oct SAT, and I'm wondering before I just ask my parents for their credit card, if I should wait for my score on the 25th? If my SAT score improved to like, a 1600, if I still should consider the ACT?

I thought it was opposite. Anyway... YES take the ACT. There is a good chance that you will do better on it than the SAT regardless of your weakness.

I won't be taking Chem. until next semester, should I consider self-studying the science part? I'm aiming for the low-30's, or at the verrrry least, the mid-20's. As you can see from my math, I don't wanna try to compensate it with reading and writing again. Eek.

Science is just interpreting data...you need very little science knowledge to do it as long as you can read graphs/charts/experiments. (They do occasionally through in the question which needs outside knowledge though).

I am a math kid. 770 Math 660 Reading (1st and only time on the SAT btw). I got a 33 on the ACT which is better than a 1430/1600 on the conversion charts.

I'd say go for it, what do you have to lose, 25 bucks?

No, I think the ACT is science and math oriented and the SAT is reading oriented. If you are worse at math, you probably will not do as well in the ACT. I'm more of a science person, and I got a 36 ACT (but not 2400).

However, your teachers may be saying the ACT is reading oriented because being a fast reader pays off more in the ACT than in the SAT. Another thing you have to take into consideration is how fast of a worker you are. The ACT is way more fast-paced than the SAT. If you work quickly and read quickly, the ACT may be a good option for you.

Is it not good to take the ACTs if you are only in precalculus this year? We just finished covering trig functions..

Haha I did the same thing as AdamJaz, and my name is also Adam ^_^. Math: 780, CR: 650, ACT: 35.

The reading on the ACT was sooo much easier. Hahah even then ACT text was bigger and more friendly,- and there is no vocab, which is amazing because that's where i get f'd. Take ittt

I think this idea came about because before the writing section was introduced, the SAT was half math while the ACT was only 1/4 math (and the ACT science section is more like reading). So even though the math section on the ACT is reportedly more advanced, being weak in math would hurt you more on the SAT. I'm not sure this thinking still applies to the new SAT with writing.

Celita, you should be fine if you've had a little trig.
