ACT no writing?

For some reason D seems to think that signing up for the ACT w/no writing is okay, she's signed up but I believe/hope we will be able to change it if necessary. I've looked briefly thru a few college websites she's shown interest here in the Pacific Northwest and can't find much about it, same with any req. for SAT subject tests...just see only the required SAT and/or ACT mentioned, not any other requirement details.

My feeling is it just makes sense to sign up for the whole thing but I do see where many students who scored great otherwise have been dissapointed in the ACT writing portion so maybe she's onto something.

Looking for opinions/input on this.

Thanks in advance!

Most colleges want/require the writing portion.

Many colleges require the writing portion despite that ACT says it is “optional.” Colleges do tell you on their sites whether they require the writing; it is just not always easy to find on the site. Same as to SAT IIs, although you can go here for a list of colleges that require, recommend, or consider SAT IIs: [Compass: Admissions Requirements](<a href=“SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group”>SAT Subject Test Requirements and Recommendations - Compass Education Group)

I agree with the above two posters.
You should definitely tell your daughter to take it because if she does well and the college she wants to go to needs a writing score, she will deeply regret it.

Thanks so much, I’ll let her know and show her this thread if need be. Hopefully it’s an easy fix.

I would definitely suggest she do the ACT with writing. Personal experience: my son did the ACT without writing, scored very high, and then later found a college he wanted to apply to (had not been on his radar screen to that point) which required the ACT with writing. Had to retake the test. Not what he really wanted to have to do.

Don’t know what colleges in “Pacific Northwest” she may be considering but here is the ACT rule for some:

UWashington: writing required
Wash St: writing optional
UOregon: writing required
Oregon St: writing required
Gonzaga: writing optional
Reed: writing optional
Whitman: writing required

None of the above requires SAT IIs

Thanks again everyone, she corrected the registration last night to the ACT WITH writing :)
