My son wants to take the ACT online course from either Peterson, Kaplan, or Princeton Review. Has anyone taken these? Anyone have an opinion about these versus study books versus physically taking classes?

I never took the online one, but i took the Kaplan course, and it was a complete waste of my time and money. For me, it was so boring and I could have taught the class myself. I would say let your son take a couple practice tests by himself, gauge how he's doing and see if it's anywhere near what you expect his score to be. If he shows some problems with math fundamentals or reading comprehension, i would say that it would be good to take the course, but otherwise, all he needs is just a lot of practice, because that, ultimately, is the only thing which will raise his score. When I started practicing for the ACT, i was getting 32s and 33s, and after I took the course, my score on the real thing became a 34, which I believe was only due to the fact that the practice tests i was taking were harder than the real thing. Finally, when I took the ACT in September of my senior year, nearly a year after I took the course and had long forgotten anything they taught, I got a 36, purely because of practice. Don't be hasty to spend money on those things when all you really need is a good 15-20 dollar practice book.

My daughter is registered for the ACT online course now. I thought she might be more likely to do something online. I have to. ...encourage her a lot, which I didn't have to do with the on site SAT class, but there isn't one available this summer for the ACT.

I did an online course and found it pretty helpful. I got my score up and had an online tutor from UChicago. I think the books are helpful and some students will do fine without a course but I needed one-on-one help. With the course I did I had a week-by-week schedule based on what I needed to work on and I could work with my tutor online.

The course I used was prepme.com and it was about $500 and they send some books as well.

I think doing something online is easy since I'm online all the time anyway!
