I've taken the SAT 2 times without studying. I'm going to take it a 3rd times in September that I'm actually going to study for. I haven't taken the ACT at all yet and plan on taking it once or twice as well, maybe in September for the first time. Will my preparation for the SAT be enough to prepare me well for the ACT too, or should I prepare separately for the ACT? And if so, what are the best ways and materials to use to study for the ACT?

You definitely can’t rely on SAT prep for the ACT since they are different exams in many aspects. For one thing, the timing is much different – 60 min for 60 math questions, 45 min for 75 English questions, 35 min for 40 reading questions, and 35 min for 40 science questions. Because this isn’t the same as the SAT timing, it would require some separate prep to get down the timing for the ACT. Another difference is that the ACT has a science section which is not present in the SAT, so it will take practice to get a hold of those questions. The ACT essay is also different than the SAT essay in that it doesn’t ask as deep questions – they mainly focus on something related to school. Lastly, the ACT is well known for having more direct questions, so it may take time to become acclimated to these kinds of questions since the SAT is generally less direct. Ultimately, SAT prep is not enough nor is it right preparation for the SAT.

the math on the act is also kinda more advanced. it has trig and more math concepts (the questions are more direct too, compared to the SAT. so it’s less tricky nd more straight forward math) so you’d probably have to review math that you haven’t done in a few years. like algebra 2 and stuff
