I took the ACT with Writing in June and a few days ago my score came in. I was pleased to see that I got a 34, but I also got measly 16 on the Writing section. I thought I did well on it, and I think that there may be some mistake. Does anybody know what the best course of action is and does anybody have any experience with ACT’s regrading? I know that for $20 I can order a TIR report, but I do not know if that would be useful. However for $40 I can order for it to be regraded and any of their mistakes to be fixed, such as if it was switched with someone else’s essay. Any advice is appreciated.

Thank you, those threads were very useful. It seems like the best course of action would to first call ACT, and then file a request to rescore ASAP. Another strange thing about my score is that all the subsections have a score of 6. I wonder if that is normal. Regardless, it seems that I am not the only one with this problem, and hopefully ACT will be able to help.
You have to send the rescore request by mail. Send a letter, with a check for $50 and be clear that you want a re score on the WRITING only. If they fix it and it goes up, you get your $50. If they review it and found no mistakes, you lose the $50.
Sorry to bump this thread, but I had a similar problem with the June ACT…got a 34 composite and a strangely low essay score. I know how to send in a re-score request, but is it possible that they can give me a lower score when they re-score my essay? Thanks
Send your 34. Don’t sweat the essay score. I wouldn’t even waste the $50 for a re-score that will likely not change your score enough to make a difference. Universities know that the ACT Essay scoring rubric is messed up and most aren’t going to factor your essay into their decision.
