ACT Scores

I got a 35 on the ACT but a 21 on the writing which makes me ask if I should submit my score or just go with my SAT score. What should I do?

My daughter also got a high composite score and a remarkably low writing score. If nothing else, you should write to the ACT, pay the $50 fee, and ask for a re-score. If they adjust the score, they will refund the check.

I have read that most colleges ignore the writing score. However, some explicitly require the ACT with writing. I would be curious to hear from this year’s applicants if the writing score on the ACT seemed to have any bearing on their admission outcomes.

Did your daughter have her essay rescored?

Ah, dude. Same situation. 35, but 19. I sent in my rescore today.

Yes. It went up a little but was still relatively poor. I think she got a 35 in the English component but low-mid 20’s in writing.

So it’s not too late to rescore? I took my test back in April…

So you are a rising senior? I don’t think it is too late but you can email ACT and ask. We found them responsive.

Yes I’m a rising senior. I will surely email ACT. However, do you think a 750 on the old SAT writing with an 8 on the essay plus good college application essays will be enough to offset my bad ACT writing score?

Joeweller I feel your pain. Did you take the old SAT or the new one with writing?

@timduncan1089

I took the old SAT; got a 800/10 in Writing. Your 750 is strong, but the 8 is a little low. Then again, the SAT essay is concentrated crap. If you can write good essays in your app, I think it’ll show them you’re a good writer.

Also, I did also take the test in APRIL. You have until Aug. 2 to send it in! I had to ask them, too. It’s exactly 3 months after you got an email from ACT saying your full score report is ready.

@joeweller if I have it rescored do you think there’s a chance it goes down?

It can only remain unchanged or go up – can’t go down!

@joeweller awesome! Where do I go to see the necessary steps to send in a rescore request?

@joeweller Nevermind. I just found out I’m a day to late to rescore

@timduncan1089 Why is that? When did you get the email for your score report?

@joeweller I called the ACT and they said I received it April 28

@joeweller Do you think I should retake the ACT or just accept my fate?

@timduncan1089 I was a bit of a creep and looked through your post history. You have the EXACT same scores for each subsection as I do. If my rescore fails or doesn’t go up by much, I’ll be in the same situation as you, and I’m likely going to retake in September and if I do better, I’m going to delete my April score (you can completely delete ACT scores)!

@joeweller haha that’s not too creepy. But you should definitely let me know how your rescore goes. I don’t think I’m going to retake it. I’ll focus on improving my SAT scores.

Most colleges don’t care about your writing your score. They’ll get to see how you write on the essays anyways. Waste of $50 IMO.
