I recently got my ACT score back, and I got a 33. I am somewhat happy with his score; however I don't want to limit my college options. In other words I want to be potentially competitive at some lower tier ives and exclusive private schools. Should I retake my ACT?

It depends a lot on your other activities and grades at this point. My brother got a 34 but didn’t get accepted into some lower tier ivies because of his lack of extra circulars. If you are involved heavily with a lot of things, there is absolutely no need to retake the test.

A 33 seems to meet all middle ground scores for most ivies. So, your score and a good gpa would get you through the “stats” portion of your application, but I would begin to focus more on the other parts (EC, community service, awards, essays, recs, etc.). If you think you can do better and aren’t wasting time, by all means retake the ACT, but I do think a 33 will suffice. Congratulations on your score, even if you do retake it!

No. You’re fine. You don’t need to retake it unless you are below the 25th percentile for any school you’re shooting for. With that score all schools you apply to will know you can handle their academics, but they will want to see what you can do outside the classroom . Save those minutes you will waste studying and put them towards something you enjoy.

Like everyone said depends on your GPA and ECs. That being said. My daughter had a 4.0 unweighted GPA. and got a 34 on ACT 1st time. She has good ECs with some national wins. Her guidance counselor wanted her to take it again. I thought he was crazy. But she did try it again and got a 35. Don’t know if it’s going to make much of a difference but he wanted her to get a 35 to be competative for some scholarships. So why not try it again.

With ACT 33, you got the ticket to the game. It is around the application average for top schools. However, higher score will still help your chance a little bit. Also, it will give you more chances in getting merit aids from other schools. I can testify that ACT 35 will make you competitive for some merit aids although it is still not guaranteed. So momworried’s D’s GC is correct.

If you think you can get a better score without too much effort, you may consider retaking it.
