ACT Scores of Accepted Vandy Students?

I'm hoping to be accepted into Vanderbilt on early acceptance in Nov. and I only have two ACT oppertunities until then. I only made a 27 the first time, and I know that won't cut it, obviously, but I was wondering what the scores were of people who did get accepted. Particularly those got accepted on an academic scholarship. Also, if anyone has any advice on how to raise my current score by Oct. that would be greatly appreciated.

Current scoring:

Composite: 27
English: 29 (could be better)
Reading: 29 (content with)
Math: 23 (pathetic! lowest score on practice tests was a 28)
Science 26 (4-6 pts lower than practice tests... I was so nervous)

And if anyone would like to be brutally honest on what they personally think my chances of getting in are, that would also be appreciated.

3.9667 GPA. (Will raise by next yr)
Gov. School 2006
Honors classes (next yrs include: Physics AP, Chem II AP, Statistics H+, Pre Calc H+, Eng st., Gov/DramaII)
6 other honors classes throughout High School.
Salitatorian in-running. Will get if I make straight A's next yr.
Normal amount of prestigious clubs, Treasurer of one.
Varsity Swim Team

But please be honest... thanks so much!

I made a 32 and applied early decision and was accepted. Just so you know, I don't think they offer as much (if any) merit money to early decision acceptees...simply because they don't have to lure you in as much as they do the regular decision acceptees. I didn't get any merit money...just need-based.

What Governor's School did you get accepted to? I went to the Tennessee Heritage one last year at ETSU.

If possible, I think you should take both the ACT and the SAT...some people do pretty well on one, but not so hot on the other.

I kept taking it until my score improved. I finally got it up to 33, 34 combined. I talked to multiple people in the admissions department and some said that Vandy takes combined ACT scores and others said that they didn't...Good luck

I had a 32 and got in RD

how did you score a 27 with a 3.97 gpa

Replying in order:

*That's actually the same Gov. School I got accepted to! I'm going to ETSU in June and I can't wait. The heritage one, I heard from a friend of mine who went there last year (Kayla V.), is the best. Maybe you remember her? And all I need is need-based scholarships anyway. I have plenty of need... trust me. Lol.

*And I've been a little nervous to take the SAT to be honest. I always figured that if I'd do well on one it would be the ACT.

*Thanks for the good luck! I really appreciate it. I wish/hope I get scores as good as a 33-34. That's amazing. Kudos.

*And as for my score.. I don't know. Like I said, I'm really ashamed of it. I do fantastic scholastically in school, but on the test I became so nervous. I just knew Vandy was riding on it and I just freaked. However, that isn't to blame for everything. I need to fix my errors and learn to coach myself to get atleast a 31 or more.

And LostLittleFlute... what did you do to prepare for the ACT? & what math were you in when you took it? PreCal? Thanks..

i got a 26 on my ACT... hahha.... horrible, i got so low because i didnt have time to prepare for it.><
But, i am like you, i have 3.9+ GPA and 4.73 weighted GPA.
My test score is very low, but i think i got accepted is because of all my other stuff is good, esp my EC: 3 sports, clubs, work.
And also, me being an Asian, girl , going to major in engineering help alot too. =P
I didnt get any academic scholarship, but alot of need-based.
I hope it helped!

VandyHopeful: I think we go to the same school! Heh, yeah, there were 3 "Smyrnites" at ETSU last year...me (Amy Shaw), Kelsey Jensen, and Kayla. I didn't do anything to prepare for the ACT...I just took it once...the free one. I took it in October this past fall, so I was in Statistics at the time, but I had already gone through Pre-Cal and Calculus.

I recommend taking the SAT as well...I took it twice, with my score greatly improving the second time around. Although my best SAT score was just about equal to my ACT one, you never know...you could do better, so take the chance, at least once!

Oh, a tip for Governor's School...if they let you choose classes (and they're the same as the ones we had last year)...whatever you do, don't get astronomy! It was horribly boring, plus the other group was having a great time doing historic preservation while we sat in a planetariam.

Wow! Yeah, we do go to the same school. Actually, I'm in Virtual Enterprise right now. I suppose I'll have to find someone to point you out? How weird... but fun. Thanks a lot for all of your help. I really appreciate it. Maybe I will take the SAT now... atleast once. After all, I don't have to send the scores anywhere. For me, I'm only in Geometry Honors right now. W/ Mrs. Yates. And it's not like I'm bad at it... my lowest grade all year has been a 101. Next yr I have PreCal but, the last ACT testing oppertunity I have is in Oct. :( I think having a higher math would really help! I'm thinking about getting a Math tutor from one a teacher recommended for the ACT... just to make sure I'm really prepared.

OMG thanks a lot for the class tip! Kayla didn't say you got to choose classes, and I had no clue! I'll definatly not take astronomy. (I would have though. In theory it sounds exciting) Any other tips?

Oh, and I just got through e-mailing Ruth Hausman about taking the ACT on June 10th and they're going to make an exception and let me take it. Although, I have to make up essays b/c they're going to Knoxville that day. To, like, four places I think.

And, thanks, Cutiyuyu, that's encouraging. Did you apply early by any chance?

Anyone know of many 35 or 36's being rejected?

I have heard of those with 35s getting rejected from Vandy, although I don't know of any personally...I know a few 35s and a 36 that got rejected from all of the Ivys though....

Honestly, I really don't think Vandy is selective enough that they would reject a 35+ unless there were something really offputting about that application.

It's getting there ;).

VandyHopeful, I did regular decision.

I got in RD.
My ACT scores went like this. 29-30-33

hey im in the same boat as you 3.93 GPA uw and a 28 ACT E 25, R 27, Math 35, Sc 25.

Marchballer, I wish I could get my math that high. That's a truely impressive score. Did you make that on the April one? I heard it was the hardest ACT Math of the year, and I have to say I agree... it was brutal. Also, are you applying to Vanderbilt or have you already gotten in?

And, thanks Cutiyuyu, that's cool. Congrats..

Hansel, I hope my scoring goes as well.

My ACT was 34 and I got in RD, but my SAT scores weren't so great. I'd take the SAT if I were you as well. They are two different tests and you might like the SAT better. Good luck with everything!

Nah that Math was the Feb one. the April one i took but am reluctant to view them online so i am waiting on those scores. i think i got a perfect score. Too bad my other 3 couldnt be as high.
Oh yeah I am a Junior going to apply RD next year.

Wow, well congrats. I hope it was a perfect score.. I thought it was horrible. Good luck on getting into Vandy and keep me updated on your fantastic scores!

Thanks, silversparks, I think I will. Congrats on the 34! I'd kill for that score.

I got in RD with a composite 28 (not that good I know). But if I could get in I'm sure you have a great chance.
