ACT scores

Hello there.

I have a 4.08 GPA along with a ACT score of 29 ( 95% ). Princeton review lists the average Brown score as 29. Am I all set or should I try and get my score up higher ? What’s a good score that won’t hurt my chances?

Thanks

There´s more to admissions than just scores. If you really want people to give you an honest opinion, it´s probably a good idea to post more stats, i.e. ec´s, awards, rank, what makes you unique...etc. etc. But you´re welcome to read my earlier post on the thread that desichick started about my opinions on college admissions. They might help, but I am not by any means a connoisseur on college admissions.

Hey.. Here are my stats:

I am currently a junior in a private school here in Connecticut. I will be applying as an International student ( since I'm an Indian passport holder, born and brought up in the middle east and moved to the US 2 years ago ).

My GPA so far has been around 4.08. The following are my junior courses:

AP Physics B
AP Computer Science A
Calculus Honors
English III Honors
Spanish II
US History
Guitar Lessons

I hope to take the following courses as a senior:

AP Calculus AB
AP Literature
Chemistry Honors
Spanish III Honors
International Relations ( Semester course )
Economics ( Semester course )
Guitar lessons

The following are some of my extra-curriculars ( copied from a resume I had prepared ) :

1) Flying Single-Engine Aircraft - Sep. 2005 – Present
• Earned Solo Pilot privileges soon after 16th birthday.
• On track to receive Private Pilot License & Instrument Rating on 17th birthday.

2) Weight Training - Sep 1996 – Present
• Maintain a rigorous strengthening regimen to alleviate right-arm mobility constraint.

3) Swimming - Sep. 1998 – Present
• Continue to hone swimming skills despite the physical challenge.

4) Music Lessons
• Guitar - September 2004 - Present
• Tabla ( Indian Drums ) - March 2006 - Present

5) Glider Pilot License ( Will get it this summer. Got a $1900 grant from my school to get my license.. )

Flying is my main passion and thats what I love doing. If someone were to wake me up at 3 am and tell me that I can go flying, I'd jump at the oppurtunity . Having taken a few lessons in Tabla during my spring break, I realized I really like it and hope to take lessons over the summer and continue practicing.

I also love learning languages: I am fluent in English, Urdu, Hindi & Sindhi ; have basic knowledge of Spanish & Mandarin ; can read and write Arabic; can comprehend Gujurati ( Indian dialect )

My intended major: Mechanical Engineering
My intended minor: Economics ( or maybe a foreign language )

Great post! I'm just trying to get a feel for what my chances are.. Ill apply and give it my best shot regardless but still.. The suspense is killing me.. lol..:)

I don't think anyone, absent a hook, can consider themselves "all set" for a highly selective school. Yes, your stats compare well to the stats of those who are accepted. But the majority of people with the same sort of stats will still be turned down. Here is a chart -- it shows the score breakdown of SAT scores and class rank and shows how many of each category applied, were accepted, and matriculated:http://tinyurl.com/mywwq

There are no comparable stats for the ACT, probably because so few people go in just with that. My daughter got accepted with a 30, but her average score in the subparts relevant to her chosen field was 33. I've heard on CC of kids with higher overall ACT scores than she had that were turned down. If you convert your ACT score to an SAT equivalent (google to find the chart), you might get some indication.

I think Brown is not as stats driven as some places but will look to the entire application.

Hey, thanks jai6638. You seem to have a real passion for flying and learning languages. Why not try to encompass all that passion into an essay?
