Here’s how I improved my reading (in practice tests only. I never took real ACT until today).

First time I tried throughly reading ALL words. I finished with like 30 seconds to spare. I got a 32 (Real ACT Prep).

Second time, I tried the same thing. Got a 31.

Third time, again, the same thing. Got a 31.

I bought the 1296 book.

They had reading practices, so I spent time trying to read each passage under 4 minutes.
I read>skimmed the passage, writing the main idea beside each paragraph along with underlining terms that I’m not familiar with.

Once I wrote those notes, It was so much easier to locate the answers.

Also, I read the passages in the order that I liked.

Since I thought Prose was most entertaining I went Prose -> Natural Science (my 2nd favorite) -> Social Science -> Humanities

On the fourth and fifth ACT practice tests on the Real ACT Prep guide, I got 35, 36 respectively.

practice a lot. I suggest using 1296 and the real act book. do all the reals, then do the 1296 and then go back and redo the reals (atleast a month later)… you’ll see improvement after you figure out a strategy that works best for you

I think I’ve taken 6 or 7 practice tests total before taking the actual ACT.
I took five of those as part of my Princeton Review class (the teacher sucked so I didn’t really learn any strategies, but taking the tests was still helpful).
Then I took one other 1296 test my own last year just to practice, and I took first one out of the red Real ACT prep book. Plus I did single sections here and there to brush up.
Practice is the way to go…the first time I took an ACT practice test as a sophomore, I got a 26 composite, which I wasn’t happy with at all.
But I’ve come a long way and I think I made a 31 on today’s test.
I’m hoping to retake it twice more and maybe make a 36…lol it sounds like a long shot but I figure if I keep taking more practice tests I’ll eventually get close enough (I have 4 left in the red book plus 2 in the 1296 book).

For you with the reading, I know where you’re coming from. Reading isn’t my strongest section…I get 28’s or 29’s on it most of the time. But I have improved with timing myself and alloting enough time to do each passage. Don’t spend too much time on the same passage - spend about 9 minutes on each and you should be fine. And do NOT read the whole passage. I used to do that and it was really detrimental to my score. Speed-read it and go back to the passage to find the answers, and do the line references first because they are generally easier to answer than the broader “purpose questions.”
Hopefully I got a 30 on reading this time! It was my first time taking it by the way fingers crossed
