ACT vs SAT

Do colleges on the east and west coast prefer the SAT over the ACT?

No, not anymore.

Colleges almost uniformly accept either SAT or ACT without preference. There is one exception, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, which is located in a state where the SAT is the test usually taken by high school students. It prefers the ACT…

Cal Poly has no preference. They accept both tests.

Percent of Applicants Admitted: 31%

Test Scores – 25th / 75th Percentile
SAT Critical Reading: 550 / 650
SAT Math: 590 / 690

ACT Composite: 25 / 30
ACT English: 24 / 31
ACT Math: 26 / 31

Consider taking a practice test of each type. See where you score the best and focus on that test.

No, Cal Poly SLO prefers ACT, even though it accepts both.

I know several admitted students who never took the ACT.

I am in direct contact with the admissions office on a regular basis and they confirm no preference.

@IamtheGoat Where is your information from?

@Heretohelpyou Of course, you can be accepted with just SAT. I submitted only my SAT. Also, it’s on their website, under “testing information (sat/act)”.
It says that the “ACT is the preferred test for Cal Poly.”
