I know for a fact most schools accept either test. But for some reason I have a gut feeling most schools prefer the SAT over the ACT. Could this be true? Let's say for example schools like Berkeley or UCLA?

UCLA and Berk, no.

But one that I know does now is Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

I see no reason not to take schools at their word. If they say they have no preference, they don't. They could have a preference if they wanted to. In fact, many used to, then changed them. I think the lingering effect of what used to be true (what used to be recommended) is what is causing your gut feeling.

I would think that if most schools had a preference, they would like the ACT better. Recently, a lot of people have been saying the ACT is a much better test and the SAT is getting less and less accurate.

Here's an article about the UC system's use of ACT and SAT scores.
