<p>Take both and see which one gives you the highest score.</p>
<p>If you're not a good writer then the ACT would probably be better. All schools I know of accept both. Also, some colleges require SAT IIs but not if taking the ACT.</p>
<p>I took the SAT (without prep) and did horribly. I don't have a great vocabulary and the SAT's constant switching from writing to math to reading to math, etc. drove me insane. I then looked into the ACT, and did much better with minimal prep (1950 SAT vs. 34 ACT -> 2260). Definitely try both. I only wish I had sooner!</p>
<p>The ACT's "optional" writing section is required by many colleges, including Harvard. A student should be sure to check with all potential schools before deciding to take the ACT without the writing component.</p>
