Ok, sorry for the English pun, but I thought it was appropriate here. My son received a score of 8 on his ACT Writing Section. While his overall score does not bother me, the fact that he got all 8s on each of the four individual criteria seems a little suspect. Well I pointed this out in another thread and it seems like MANY people had straight scores in each individual criteria. There is an example of a student with a 36 Composite score getting 6/6/6/6 on Writing - very peculiar and strangely coincidental.
To me it seems like lazy scoring tactics by the folks at ACT. I’d love for someone to chime in a prove me wrong.
Anyone else get straight 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, etc. on their Writing score?
I recognize the writing changed to the 12 point scale this time, but the sub-score categories predate this change. My son had a 24 on the writing for the February test, with sub-scores of 9,9,7,8. On the September test at issue, he had an overall score of 8, with sub-scores of 8,7,8,9. So he, for one, did not have the straight-across-the-board same number sub-scores, either time. For what it’s worth …
You can see the pattern on Compass’ article titled “ACT Writing Scores Explained 2016-2017.” Take a look at the last bar graph, and you’ll see spikes that correspond to scores of 6/6/6/6, 7/7/7/7, 8/8/8/8… On the June 2016 test, essay scores were converted as follows:
Raw 24 (6/6/6/6) --> Scaled 16
Raw 28 (7/7/7/7) --> Scaled 19
Raw 32 (8/8/8/8) --> Scaled 23
I think the scaling varied slightly by test date, so I’m guessing that a raw 32 sometimes converted to a scaled 24.
