Is 8 the most common Writing score on the ACT?

Between my two kids, they took the ACT test 6 times. Both kids received an 8 on the Writing portion of the exam each time. Is there any way to see the typical distribution of Writing grades? Have you seen a lot of 8s, too?

Their scores on the other sections of the exams varied, sometimes widely. Seems odd that they both got 8s in writing consistently.

I got a 10 then an eight hahaha

I ready somewhere that the average ACT writing score is between 7 and 8, so it’s probably around or a little above average.

The writing scores seem to be normally distributed, so I’d say the most common score is either 6 or 8…

Come on, people. I know you’re reading this. What did you (or your child score) in Writing on the ACT? This is an informal poll. No one knows who you are. I’m just trying to ascertain whether all of the 8s in my family were a coincidence.

I read somewhere that most scores are even rather than odd because odd scores mean the raters gave the essay different scores. S scored 8 and 9.

@carpediem44, I never took the ACT writing, but both times I took the SAT, I scored 8 on the essay…

@carpediem44 I scored a 9 the first time and an 8 the second

10 first 8 second

8 first try, going to get 10+ next time :)

DD scored an 11 - she said that the more you write the higher the score? She only took it once.

Scored a 10 first and only ACT w/writing. Its 99th percentile so i was actually super happy. If you want more than an 8, use this guide. It’s short, simple, and to-the-point. You WILL see results. I thought i wrote a terrible essay but it turns out i structured it very well and it flowed well enough. And ALWAYS add a counterargument. Good luck if anyone plans on retaking

My daughter got an 8 the first time, a 9 the second time, and then a 7 the third time. Her average was an 8. 7-9 seems to be the most common score.

Just got the score for the September test date. 8 on the writing. Composite is a 32 either way, but the combined English 31 + Writing 8 resulted in a 29 score. Last test scores were a 33 in English, no writing portions, but he managed to bring his Math up (from 26 to 29) which was his goal anyway, along with taking the Writing portion for those colleges which require it. No harm, no foul, I guess.

8 score is a bit weird, though. He thought he did well, and this is the kid who made a 5 on his AP English Language exam last May.

He’s trying to decide if he wants one more go at it on October 27. I think he should stop here, but he has his heart set on Colorado College, he has no “hook”, and his unweighted GPA is a 3.4 so it’s a bit of a reach since he’ll need financial aid and CC is “need sensitive” in their admissions.

I am so looking forward to this anxious, fretful time in our lives to be over and behind us. Pacing is everything, right?

My D13 took the ACT 5 times…received an 8 each time.
My D11 took the ACT 3 times… received an 8 each time.

I got a 11 on the SAT essay, but an 8 on thr ACT…oh well hah

I took the ACT twice cold. 31.25 the first time with a 6 writing, and 30.75 second time with an 8.

The 50th percentile of the writing portion is a 7. But, not so average for college confidential.

people keep saying if you write more on the ACT then you get a higher score.

D has done writing twice and gotten a 9 and 8 I think.
