<p>The writing score isn't factored into your composite, so it won't have any implication on your actual score. Colleges, however, can still see the writing score either as a subscore or as a combined English/Writing score. Plus, colleges can actually read your essay and the graded remarks. Some colleges prefer the essay and it is a requirement for admission while others do not. It depends on where you are applying.</p>
<p>This is interesting, since I did the optional essay and did terribly bad (7/12) compared to my 34 composite. I hope colleges get to read my essay and the graded remarks, because the graded remarks were, uh, good. It's a mystery. <em>shrug</em></p>
