No shooter, just a deranged nut who plowed his car into a group of people, jumped out and started hacking at them with a butcher knife. Within two minutes he was dead from police gunfire.
I’d rather people think it was a shooter than not even if there is a 1% chance of an active shooter.
@OHmomof2 I was trying to think if you had a child at OSU or not.
Thank you @romanigypsyeyes - I don’t but many, many of my friends do.
If the police shot the attacker minutes after it began, presumably the shots that were heard were those of the police. Giving timing, makes some sense those shots would have been viewed as part of the attack rather than what ended it. and like @romanigypsyeyes says, better safe than the other way around. Much worse if report goes out about knife yielding attacker who turns out to have a gun.
Very happy to hear from my son shortly after word broke that he was safe in an academic building a couple blocks away from the incident. All of his friends are ok as well. Thoughts and prayers to those injured.
Apparently, a Somali man/student did the attack. I’m sure we’ll hear about him visiting ISIS/AQ websites, etc. These lone wolf attacks are basically impossible to stop.
Damnit. The last thing we needed was for this to be a north African/Middle Eastern immigrant. Especially in the wake of the extremely high rate of hate crimes lately.
Here in America we have disagreements about guns. Seem irresponsible to claim there was an active shooter when there was not. It just seems so inflammatory given that no gun was used at all. When I hear active shooter I immediately think of Sandy Hook which shook me to the core. Call me crazy but when a headline says “active shooter”, I think of a gun wielding bad guy. Not a guy with a knife.
These news outlets need to do a better job of filtering out the false from the true.
Dont blame the media. OSU’s emergency alert tweeted out that it was an active shooter https://mobile.twitter.com/OSU_EMFP?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

I’m pretty sure “active shooter” is a Homeland Security alert and it means any person that is actively trying to cause harm to a group of people - not exact definition but something close. It just calls for everyone to take shelter in place.
Official FBI definition of Active Shooter:
An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area, and recent active shooter incidents have underscored the need for a coordinated response by law enforcement and others to save lives.
https://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/active_shooter_booklet.pdf
“An Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms(s) and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly.”
wow. Did not know that. Ok. I stand corrected. I will still have a hard time hearing the term and not thinking of a gun. But I see now that my understanding of the term was incorrect.
I hear it was an 18 year old Somali also.
If one wanted to actually plan an effective terror attack, this past Saturday would have been the day. Anywhere on or near campus.
“Lone wolf” or just disturbed individual, whatever it turns out to be, it seems so poorly planned to have been a spur of the moment thing.
I’m just glad no one but the attacker was seriously hurt (except maybe one? not sure on that)
http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2016/11/28/active-shooter.html says that:
- One suspect is dead.
- Suspect has been identified as a first year student at the university.
- Police say that there are no other suspects.
- Nine injured from either being hit by a vehicle or attacked with a butcher knife.
That is a terrible sentiment.
Police presence on Saturday was huge. Bigger than normal game and even Michigan game. I saw DHS personnel checking out a bus shuttling people to the game.
Actually the problem is not the immigrants. It’s the children of the immigrants. We need to understand why instead of integrating into American culture they are becoming disaffected and radicalized.
I am always surprised and a bit baffled when a Somali immigrant is involved in these events, or tries to join ISIS and the like. From the news reports I have seen in recent years, much of the Somali population in places like Minneapolis and Seattle are fairly middle class or working class people. They include many entrepreneurs. What is it about the U.S. that allows young Somalis or second generation individuals to violently resent the U.S.? Is it purely the pull of Islamic grievance that motivates such individuals as well as people like the Tsarnaevs? The Ohio State University perpetrator is reported to have been an honor student at college.
Well we don’t know if he was inspired by ISIS or not. Maybe he was mad about a grade or had a psychological break like so many kids his age do when away at college for the first time. I’m sure we will find out.
abcNews reports that his facebook posts indicated that he was upset by recent attacks on moslems in the US.
