Adding a Subject test and Reporting??

Daughter is taking Math Subject 2 this weekend. If she feels like things are going great, I understand she can decide to take an additional subject test…in which case, she’d probably take math subject 1.

My questions - does it make sense to take math 2 AND math 1 or is that frowned upon.
If she doesn’t do as well on Math 1 would she have to report BOTH or can she just report the one she does best on?

Just trying to figure out if it’s worthwhile to take both and also find out of doing poorly on one would effect the other

If you take two subject tests the same day I’m pretty sure if you want to cancel one of them you will, have to cancel both scores

She could choose but is there time to do so is the larger question.

My son is taking another subject test on Saturday. He’s sending them directly to the schools (not his EA school) without seeing what he got. One of them is to University of California (their application deadline is tomorrow, he turned his in over the weekend).

He took his SATs earlier but decided to apply Early Action to a school he hadn’t sent his scores to. It isn’t instantaneous even though it is electronic and the scores are already there. It took a week for it to be sent. And then another week for the school to show on the application status site that they received them.

So need to factor in those deadlines and take in to account that the time it takes for the college board to send the scores. Will there be time to see which score is better to send?

yes, definitely, but when you send score reports can you send just ONE test from a day or do they get the report of all tests taken on that day? She’s a junior

They all get sent from that day. You can’t pick and choose if you’re using the free report option. So if she has time then you don’t have to send it using the free score send? It costs $12 currently to send to each school. Since she is a Junior, and if you don’t mind spending $12 per school for this subject test? You could wait.

ok, I think i understand. Hypothetically, say she gets a 770 on one and a 690 on the other. When it IS time to send the scores to colleges can she choose JUST one test taken on the SAME test date?

Yes. Say in the Fall of 2018 she decides to send her scores to colleges. She can choose which subject tests to send. Even if they were taken on the same day. You are given a checkbox next to all the subject tests regardless of when it was taken. Use the score choice option, uncheck the 690 one and that won’t be sent.

FYI. Here is more from the collegeboard on how it works: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/scores/sending-scores/score-choice

  1. If she takes both tests, be aware that for any college that requires or recommedns subject tests, those two tests will count as only one because they are tests in the same subject and only one of them will be considered for admisison, usually the one with the higher score..
  2. If she takes both and wants to cancel one by the Wednesday after taking the test, she will have to cancel both because cancellation is of the test date and any tests taken on that date are cancelled.
  3. If she identifies a college in her test application as one to automatically recive scores upon release, e.g., as one of her four free sends, that college will receive both tests because there is no option to prevent sending both in that situation. If, instead, she waits until after scores are released to send scores, she can then choose to send only one. However, that does not necessarily hide the score from the college. Many high schools put all your scores on your high school transcript sent to colleges and, if her school does, exercising score choice with College Board would be a futile act.
  4. You may have time-of-send issues. Some colleges want all scores in their hands by the early January application deadline and if she is applying to one of those, she really needs to designate the college as one to automatically receive scores upon release in her test application, which results in the fastest form of delivery (scores are usually sent one to two business days before you even get them online). For other colleges with January application deadlines, you likely can wait until scores come out to decide what to send. However, adding a test on the test day can lead to another problem -- your scores could be delayed. Many have reported that the release of their scores were delayed, up to a week or or more after the test score release date, when they added or changed a test on the test day, and some have reported not getting scores timely for any of the subject tests they took on the test date when they added one.

Thank you so much. All very helpful information. I think she just needs to cram at this point! She took a practice Barrons Math2 test yesterday and did not do nearly as well as she had hoped. That said, she is meeting with her calc teacher today to go over some calculator tricks and review a couple of the items that she feels rusty on. I don’t think she’ll be in the 750 plus crowd, so not sure that it’s even worthwhile to test, but she’ll do it and see how it goes. I would be happy with 700+, but it seems from reading this forum, that a 700 is NOT anything to be happy with!
