I recently started the thread Why Students Are Choosing HBCUs and had difficulty choosing the appropriate venue on CC.
The College Search & Selection category has subforums for Christian Colleges, Community Colleges, Women’s Colleges, and Online Degrees, but nothing for HBCUs. And there is an area for African-American Students under Specialty College Admissions Topics, but HBCUs are not exclusively for African-American students.
Thus, I would like to request that CC consider adding a subcategory for HBCUs under College Search & Selection.

I think this category would be really helpful. Would make it much easier to search. I am seeing a big increased interest in HBCUs among the students I know.

This seems like a solid suggestion. Should the category be called:
HBCU
Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Something else (please reply with suggestions)
So that the category isn’t empty, I’d also want to move some topics that have already been created. For a start, I think topics with HBCU in the title from the College Search and Selection category can be safely moved. Any other leads?

I think Historically Black Colleges and Universities is very clear. Many high school students may not know the acronym HBCU.
You could link all the individual HBCU subforums in that subforum. You could also link the African American students subforum.
I’ll tags a few users here who might have suggestions.

I do think it would be useful to have the acronym HBCU in the title instead of (or in addition to) the long name. I always hear them called HBCUs, not the full name. What I am hoping is that when some parent or some kid does a Google search for HBCUs, that they find their way to College Confidential. I, myself, never went looking for College Confidential-- Google found it for me when I was searching under a specific acronym that applied to my kid.

You can always put HBCU in parentheses after the full name.

Could you combine both choices? Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) so that it is easy for anyone to find?

I wholeheartedly agree with @Lindagaf and @ChangeTheGame ’s suggestions. It makes sense to have both in the title, and I like the (HBCU) in parentheses.

I ended up going with “Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU)” The ampersand is necessary to fit within 50 characters. I populated the category with some older and locked threads. It would be wonderful if we had a few more threads started there to liven up the category. Any volunteers?

This thread would certainly be one that could go in that category: Non-Black Students at HBCUs
ETA: @CC_Jon Some other potential threads include:
I have watched my 2 kids choose attending a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) as 4th generation HBCU students (from their Mom’s side of the family) over other great financial and academic school options and I wanted to share a few articles (An article on 4 students who chose HBCUs over Ivy League acceptances, Why America needs HBCUs, and 20 facts about HBCUs). There are pros and cons to attending any school, so all students should always weight their own finances, goals, and “fit” when choosing a school.
But consider the following:
HBCUs make up 3% of of four-year nonprofit colleges
HBCUs account for 10% of African American students at four-year nonprofit colleges
HBCUs account for ~20% of African American graduates at four-year nonprofit colleges
HBCUs account for 27% of the nation’s African American students who earn STEM degrees
HBCUs account for 40% of the nation’s African American engineers
HBCUs account for over 50% of the nation’s African American public s…
I just wanted to share the HBCU Institutional Scholarships information and links that my family collected over the course of my kids’ admissions cycles for students (or their parents) to hunt for merit based scholarships. Some of the info listed may be hard to find as some schools have not shared this info online (but we have received going through scholarship processes at some of the schools). If you have other HBCU institutional scholarships to add to the list, please feel free to do so, and good luck hunting.

@ChangeTheGame and @Pgh1mom Thank you for your input. I am hopeful that she receives some Merit. We will be traveling there this weekend for the open house. I am probably more excited than she is.
MODERATOR’S NOTE: I changed the thread title to match the updated name of this scholars program.
I wanted to create a thread for future applicants to Howard University who are interested in STEM careers as they have a relatively new scholarship (2nd year) called the Bison Stem Scholars Program (BSSP) which offers full tuition, room, board, a summer bridge program, research/internship opportunities, study abroad opportunities, and a $1500 a year towards books and has the expressed goal of helping Howard STEM students reach PhD and MD/PhD levels of education. My daughter applied EA to Howard in October and was accepted to Howard on 12/16. On 12/20, she received an e-mailed invitation to apply from the Program with a deadline of 1/30/18. Applying to the program included an application, official high school transcript, official SAT/ACT scores, two recommendations, and 3 short (500 words or less) essays. She was notified on 02/16 that she was selected as a BSSP finalist and was invited…
Very interested in KSSP, just wondering how hard it is to get in. You can check my previous post to get a better idea of where I’m at but I consider Howard a safety
