Is it cool to try and contact roomates before school starts?

not a good idea. some of the coolest people i've met do not have facebook.

Yes.

At my school, as part of our green plan, you can only have 1 tv, 1 microwave, 1 fridge, so you have to contact your roommate to coordinate that anyhow.

Definitely... just try to not make assumptions about them based on what you see on Facebook. Many people may come across one way, but are actually very different from what you might assume.

If they don't have a facebook, it's not indicative of anything other than the fact that they just don't have one.

Add them and coordinate what stuff you'll be bringing to the dorm (i.e. TV, fridge, microwave, etc).

I've added both my 1 roommate and my 2 suitemates just to talk and coordinate stuff. :)

I e-mailed both my roommates, and have gotten zero responses from either.

One of them did add me to facebook though, which begs the question: if you add me on facebook, you must have seen my email, so why didn't you answer?

I lived in a suite with several girls, and we all added each other on facebook first. now it's a really amusing topic of conversation to talk about our odd impressions of each other based on facebook.
I think it's pretty strange not to add your roommate though... since pretty much everyone does it now.

Yes, it's a good way to make contact and work out the room arrangements. My son contacted his roommate and they decided to split certain things like the fridge, microwave and rug for the room. It was also nice that they got to know each other a little bit before school started.

Some people don't check the school one before school starts. If it's not the school one you sent it to, they may have a different one now or yours may have been sent to the junk mail. It's not a big deal since you have contacted them already.

I added all of mine but I'm being careful not to judge them too much based on their facebooks... people are different online. I mostly added them to get the fridge/decorating/blah blah boring stuff done before we get there so we don't end up with four fridges.

I'd suggest doing it. It made it so much easier to be in contact with my OOS roommate without ringing up expensive phone bills. Everyone I know has added their roomie on fb. It's kind of the normal thing to do if you have fb and your roomie does too.

I did... and my 'suitemates' as well... and a whole bunch of people on my floor... and people in my major... people from my area. You get the point.

I guess it's just common at my school. I've had some really awesome talks with people that are going to be living a few doors down from me.

you definitely should to ease the first day and all, as well as coordinating what to bring. yet again, you should not decide if your roommate is cool or not depending on your online talk.
