So I, like everyone else, got my housing assignment today, and I was assigned to a townhouse (did not request one). Does anyone have any experience with/opinion of them they'd like to share?

Also, I've heard controversial opinions about how asking for an increase in financial aid works, since townhouses come with the cost of a single. Were you successful in increasing your financial aid?

I was in a townhouse last year. Each one has 2 double rooms, a bathroom, kitchen, and a living room type area with chairs and a table. You’ll be pretty surprised at how big it is. I was really bummed about being assigned to one at first because I didn’t put it as any of my choices on my housing form, but it ended up being just fine. My friends in dorms were often jealous that I had a whole kitchen, living room, etc. to myself while they were stuck in a noisy, cramped dorm. The downside is that its a bit harder to meet people and less social because they are more isolated from each other than a dorm floor. But, as long as you make a little effort at the beginning to get to know the people around you, and meet people in dorms, you’ll have a great time. I ended up being thankful for my space and quiet. You can always go hang out in friend’s dorms when you want. It’s also a bit farther from the rest of the campus than other dorms (but there is a bus stop right there). Really, your dorm won’t effect your experience that much. Your experience is what you make of it no matter where you live.

About financial aid… for me they paid the difference between the townhouse price and the price of a double. But they only did that because I didn’t put townhouse as any of my preferences. I’m pretty sure if you put townhouse as any of your choices (even if its your 4th), they won’t increase the aid. Its always worth trying though. they seem to be pretty understanding.

Thanks for the response! I was a little skeptical initially, but after some research, which was confirmed by your response, I’m excited to be in a townhouse. The only downside I’m worried about is the social aspect. I have a feeling I might get spoiled having so much room.

Im in the townhouses next year too and have a few questions:
would you suggest that I reduce my meal plan? I got the traditional 14 meals per week but with a kitchen did you find that you went to the dining halls less?

did people use the extra room to have parties? or are the RAs really close by/ strict? haha

when you say theyre isolated do you mean from the rest of the freshman or from each other? like to most people get to know at least the people in their building? and how many apartments are in eah building by the way

thanks and sorry for all of the questions i just dont know that much about them!!

Ocean10, I was thinking about that as well. I currently have the 14 meal plan, but I’m going to downgrade to 10 meals. You can always upgrade later if you don’t have enough.

I feel like as for the isolation, we just need to make a little more effort to get to know each other.

I lived in the townhouses my first year. Like others said, the only downside is that it’s harder to meet people, otherwise, they’re probably the most comfortable places to live on north. If you’re in a two-story townhouse, there’s enough space for couches, big TVs, whatever you want.

Yeah definitely. Not huge parties or anything, but we’d play pong and drink like 4 nights a week haha. We were fortunate to live on the opposite end of the building as the RA and have cool neighbors, so we had no trouble with noise or anything. The townhouse across the quad from us (D i think?) got busted frequently, the police were always over

i’m in the high rise but I think the townhouses are sick for pregaming and **** because there is no RA and there is room for a pong table so I’m makin friends there haha.

I had 10 meals first semester and then went down to 7 second semester cause I had lots of BRBs left and figured I could use them to buy meals individually if I needed more than 7 per week. you can always upgrade your meal plan for free, so i would start with 10. I didn’t really eat in my townhouse that much because most of my friends lived in dorms, so if i wanted to eat with them, I had to go to the dining hall. but i would occasionally make a big dinner and have some people over. Or if you’re cramming for a test or something, you might want to skip dining hall dinner and eat in your townhouse.
