I'm trying to get the word out that I expect there to be a change to the summer offerings in philosophy, with Phil 164 on Technology and Human Values replacing Phil 1. Assuming this goes through, I will be the instructor for Phil 164 and plan to cover issues such as the ethics of sex with robots, transhumanism, whether it is ever inherently wrong to create some piece of technology, and more. This course has not been offered frequently in the past, but students seem to like it.

This change isn't yet reflected on the Schedule of Classes but I hope that it will be soon.

Dan Schwartz

I’m really interested in taking this… Do you know if it will be at the same times that Phil 1 is listed at?

I think they are going to try to give it an afternoon or midday time in order to encourage enrollment.

Okay, I can report that Phil 164 will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, 2:00 - 4:50 during Summer Session 1. It’s not up on the Schedule of Classes yet. I’ll post again when it is.

Haha, can I just come and sit in during the lectures? I’m really interested in the material you’re covering, but I can’t actually afford to take any more classes over the summer than I currently am (8 units @ $2k in fees + housing, and it’s killing my savings account).

I probably will not be allowing auditors. (I don’t get paid unless you pay.)

Also, check the Schedule of Classes beginning tomorrow morning (May 2). The class should be up by then.

Phil 164 is now on the Schedule of Classes and open to enrollment. Spread the word.

A preliminary syllabus for Phil 164 is now available at my website below. Six students are already enrolled. While that is an ideal class size, in my opinion, (my favorite class ever had one other student) a few more would still be good.
