How important is it that we send in an optional essay close to 4500 characters? For example, I have an essay that I rather like that's around 2700 characters, or 500 words. Since this essay is optional, does that mean that I can send it in as is or should I add another 1800 characters to it? As of now, it essentially conveys all the information that I want it to convey.

500 words is usually the golden standard. There is no need to approach the word limit--adcoms probably prefer if you don't.

My supplemental essay was 147 words, and I was lucky enough to be accepted. In fact, I know someone personally who left the additional essay blank and got in. I'm sure that as long as you express what you think is important, it doesn't matter how long it is or if it is even necessary at all.

It's quality, not quantity.
