Additional recommendations

Hi everyone, I have a question regarding additional recommendations. I am a junior, and spent the fall semester this year (four months) doing a semester school program. I developed an extremely close relationship with my dorm parent. He was an art teacher at the school, but I didn't take his course. However, I've talked to him so many times about personal problems and would visit at least half an hour every day, more on weekends. After the program has ended, he and I still talk over Facebook pretty frequently. Needless to say, he is probably one of the few adults (besides my parents) that know me exceptionally well -- he understands what I'm good at and my shortcomings and concerns as well.

My question is, would I be able to ask him for a recommendation (an additional/personal recommendation). I think he would be able to say some wonderful things about my personal qualities in a non-academic setting (again, he was my dorm parent). My friends who are asking for additional recs usually get them from a coach, pastor, or employer, so I was wondering if this would also qualify.

Thanks everyone!

Yes, I think it would be entirely appropriate to ask your dorm parent for a personal/non-academic letter of recommendation, IF you feel it will address qualities of yours that your other recommenders may not be aware of. You may want to mention to this person now that you might ask for a college LOR when the time comes, so that he can make some notes or write a draft while his connection with you is still fresh.
