I am an immigrant student as junior. So in my junior year, i'm taking Biology. Next year, I'm going to take Physic, computer programming, Statistic. I read most of admission requirement colleges we have to complete two to three years of science which include Chemistry and Physic. That's really tough for me. I want to major Computer science. Does it really affect to my future college for the lack of science of course? What should I do to deal with this problem? Thank you so much. Appreciate for all of your answers!!

It is greatly possible for you to get in university without some of the grades, according to my experience. I did not submit SAT but still accepted by Purdue. If it is uncomfortable for you to take science courses like Physics or Chemistry, do you have any other extracurricular experience or recommendation to prove your talent in science? But just FYI, Chm and phy are important for science student. It is unavoidable to take these again in the college.
By the way, chemistry is more like bio and physics is like math.
Good luck

Chemistry is fun. Why not take it? :D

There are many colleges that will admit you without chemistry, especially for the major that you want. Many students who are in US high schools for four years will have science each year. Some don’t. Since you just arrived, your situation is different. You need to talk with your guidance counselor to make sure you will be able to complete your own high school’s graduation requirements. That is what really matters for you. I expect that some of your classes at your old high school in that other country will count toward graduation here. They will also count when you apply to colleges here. See if you can get extra copies of your school records from that country in case you need them when you apply to college.

To chasewang:

Most of my extracurriculars were all taken place in my country. I was an IMO Cambodia team in 2010, got Honorable Mention. I don’t really know which evidence that I could show college admission to claim about my talent with science. Now, I’m in Math league team, science club, international language club and Varsity Volleyball. I already took reasoning SAT and SAT sub(math 2), I couldn’t do very well on the SAT; as you know I’ve just came in USA for 9 months ago.

TO Ilyana:

junior year = biology senior year = physic!! How can I take two science subjects in one year?

TO happymomof1:

I’m pretty sure in order to graduate we need to take 2 science subjects…Honestly, I already took some Biology, chemistry and Physic in my country, but It’s all in the past.

Truly Appreciate for all your replies!!

Does your school let you double up?

“already took some Biology, chemistry and Physic in my country, but It’s all in the past.”

If you took it when you were in the equivalent of high school, then it counts here for college applications. Sometimes when students transfer from one high school to another, the new school records all of the old school’s classes on the new transcript. Sometimes the new school just records certain classes, and sometimes they don’t record anything. You need to find out what has happened in your case. Sit down with your guidance counselor and all of your school records, and get his/her help sorting through all of this.

I think in your case it will be more important to take advanced computer science courses.

I’ll take AP-computer programming course for next school year.

How selective of a school are you aspiring to? Only at the most selective schools will it really matter, as they like to see bio, chem, and physics. Can you take a science class at a community college in the summer?

But won’t your high school transcript include the classes you took before you transferred? Those classes will be considered for college admissions.

I will apply to BU, WPI, RPI, UMass amherst, UML and Northeastern. BU is my first choice…really want to go there the most!! I don’t know if I can take any science class during summer in community college, I’ll ask my counselor to make sure about this…I check on my transcript: they put social study in it + no chemistry!! In my high school we have Chemistry since we study in 9 grade so that mean we take 3 chemistry course until we graduate!!

I think for the schools you are applying to it’s not SUPER important, but I’m not familiar with all of them… Check into the schools either on their on site or on collegeboard.org to see what HS courses they recommend. A lot of schools only require/recommend 3 years of science of which 2 should be lab so bio and physics should be enough.

However, if you CAN take chemistry then do it. Anything you can do to strengthen you app is great! See if you can take it over the summer or if you could take physics one semester and chemistry the other. But don’t stress over it if it’s not a requirement.

And for the record, Chemistry is not as hard as people make it out to be. It’s actually quite fun! If you study hard and are a dedicated student, you can get an A!

FYI- Son is currently an engineering student in college.

Applied to 15 schools and was accepted at all. He did not take chemistry in HS either. Did have AP computer sci, and AP physics, but regular calculus and again, no chemistry. He did have to take chem his first semester in college but did not have to take the first year ( or semester) of physics so it was fine in his schedule. Apparentlyl, it did not affect his acceptances to college.

Since I am an ESL student for my junior year, I’m taking AP calculus b/c. I hope Chemistry won’t ruin my future college.

Crazed:

he applied to 15 colleges? That’s too much. I don’t know if I have enough time to write an essays for all the college requirement. I would consider about any colleges that will fit with my background education. thanks
