I wanted to email a college counselor at Vanderbilt with a question about testing. I’ve met him in person before, but I’m still not sure how to address him in an email. For argument’s sake, I’ll say his name is John Doe. He was very relaxed and informal when I met him at my school, but in an email, I’m not sure whether or not I should say “Dear Mr. Doe,” or “Dear John.” I feel like Mr. Doe is too formal, but John is also too personal and informal. What should I do?
If you were my kid, I’d say this… If you have had no email (or snail mail) correspondence with him, I would address him has Mr. Doe. If he responds and signs it “John” then the next time you can address him as “John”.
Err on the side of caution. Just write “Mr. Doe” on any written communication.
