Admission difficulty

If life is all downhill from here, why don't you just go to Cornell and jump off a cliff? High school is NOT the best time of my life...

not High school, College. (4 years...) And if high school isn't the best time of your life right now, I pity you, because middle school sure as hell wasn't as fun. Unless of course you're just getting in touch with your inner child.

I thought DC was pretty happening...but then again it was summer.

I'm not much of a partyer at all. In my town, you have three choices on a Friday night: sleep, party (with obnoxious brats), or hang out at the few places that are open past nine which are Borders, Barnes & Noble, or this super cool Indie Cafe near the beach.

From what I've heard, Georgetown's not completely void of a party scene..it just made it sound like it was difficult to have parties that get outrageously out of control because you are in the middle of upscale DC...

Well I wasn't hoping for 500 people slip-in-slide foam parties with massive amounts of vodka, beer and strippers. I just hope I can find a good time every once in a while, especially out on the town (I don't think I could ever get into the whole "sit in your dorm room and get drunk with friends" thing. Totally not cool, imo). Hopefully I'll find it at Georgetown somewhere.

whoa so defensive about DC's nightlife! you guys are funny.

feel like a moron...whats SFS

School of Foreign Service.

Back on topic people...does anyone have any stats on the difficulty of admission by school? Oh yea, and on collegeboard.com it says that georgetown is 55/45 female/male. Does this mean that males get a slight boost? seems like it would.

I think males might get a slight boost.

And here's a link for Georgetown's stats:

<a href="http://www.georgetown.edu/undergrad/admissions/Information1YRProfile1.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.georgetown.edu/undergrad/admissions/Information1YRProfile1.htm</a></p>

no. one of the adcoms at Georgetown told me that females get affirmative action over males.

Why is that? Wouldn't they want to balance out the student body?

...or are they just plain sexist? LOL. :D

no, they're politically correct and give preference to females, even though females comprise more of college-goers these days.

odd.

So is there no real advantage to applying to one school over the other if I'm interested in studying politics?

If you seriously want to enter into Georgetown, and wish politics to be your major, and wish your chances to be adequate, then I'd suggest applying to the College. Although statistically, SFS has a similar admissions rate, the College only has the same admissions rate because of the sheer volume of applications (I think it's what -- 18,000 last year?) and a limited number of acceptance spaces.

Leftyleftist: I would major in political science anywhere else I'd go, so at for Georgetown, I applied to the College, and my prospective major is Government (which is just political science with a different name). If you want International Politics, go for SFS. Apply to whatever fits you, don't worry about a % pt. or 2.

I talked to my Interviewer today and he said out of all the years he has interviewed, he can count on one hand how many have been admitted early. So I'm assuming Regular might be a little easier!

Wait, huh? babybird, how is it politically correct to just randomly give females preference?

I don't think they give preference, I think more women apply.

that's probably also true, but I've heard straight from them that yes, women do recieve preferences in admissions

Ok, I did a bit of research, and here is what I found about G'town admissions:

Total applicants: 15,420
Total acceptances: 3,505
Total freshman enrollment: 1,528

Male applicants: 6,779
Male acceptances: 1,592
Male freshman enrollment: 686

Female applicants: 8,641
Female acceptances: 1,913
Female freshman enrollment: 842

So, from this information, Georgetown's overall acceptance rate last year was 22.7%. The female acceptance rate was 22.1% and the male rate was 23.5%. Males do appear to get a slight boost in admission to Georgetown. In addition, it appears that the male yield rate is significantly lower than the female yield rate, so guys, if you show a little interest, it could probably go a long way. BTW, I got these numbers from USNews:

<a href="http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/directory/premium/dradmiss_1445.php%5B/url%5D">http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/directory/premium/dradmiss_1445.php</a></p>

Babybird, the admissions officer you spoke to must have been wrong. Affirmative action is used to increase campus diversity, and georgetown applying it to females would be like MIT applying it to males (although not quite the same situation). It would be stupid for them to just randomly say that females get a boost when they already make up 54% of the student body.
