Is any kinda special preference given to international students ???

I'm looking to do mechanical engineering as my major...

You haven’t told us the most important factor: can you afford close to $60,000 per year? If so – congratulations, odds are you will get into most of the schools on your list. If you need financial aid… that’s a whole other conversation, and you should rethink your list. Michigan, UCLA, UT, Purdue are all public schools committed first and foremost to their own state residents. They give very, very little financial aid to international students.

Special preference? No. Special un-preference? Yes. If you are an international student AND an India, the odd is that you will face even fiercer competition.

Like @katliamom said, can you afford 60k?

If yes, okay(not good). In fact with your GPA and ACT, U of Michigan and UCLA will be hard shots.

If not, there is little chances that those schools will accept you. Particularly, UCLA doesn’t give fin aid to int kids, and merit scholarships are generallly given to citizens. Correct me if I am wrong, please

I can afford 60000. I’ve been accepted into both uiuc and purdue for undergraduate industrial engineering and rejected by umich, ucla, cmu and ut austin. I’m clear about the fact that industrial engineering is what I wanna major in but I cannot make up my mind between the two schools. From what I’ve read the general opinion on the internet is that uiuc is a slightly better engineering college and is a more fun school but then uiuc’s industrial engineering program is ranked 11th while purdue’s is ranked 4th. I can’t understand why this program alone has been ranked poorly for uiuc. I’m not sure how much I should rely on those rankings for taking a decision. Please share your views and tell me what all should I consider before choosing. Help.
Purdue will be filled with tech majors, UIUC will have a variety of majors. Both are in college towns (perhaps a nudge to Urbana Champaign!) and are large public universities int he Midwest.
