Admission for BME at Stony Brook. Please help

Hi i was wondering what AOI in Pre-Biomedical Engrng meant on my application? I applied for regular bme not pre so i dont understand what it means. please help

It means you are not fully into the major yet. Do well your first year and talk to them for admission.

Okay. Does this mean i am accepted? Also is there a way of getting me fully into the major before that?

I am not sure, it would be best to contact the department head. As long as you get good grades your first semester, you should be fine. I wouldn’t worry about it. When I first came into Stony they didn’t have the AOI but now its apparently very common. I guess they just want to see if you are serious before admitting you into the program.

Oh alright. So for direct questions i should contact head of bme?

Yes I think they usually have numbers on the website.

Really good question.

BME is extremely competitive for freshmen. (For that matter, so is CME – Chemical & Molecular.) We REQUIRE students to have completed Calc AND Physics, AND you need to meet minimum GPA/SAT standards, AND we have limited space in the freshman class. However, let’s say you’re a really solid student who’s taken Calc, has perfect SATs, and a 3.9 GPA… but you don’t have Physics? Then you’re admitted “AOI” (“area of interest”) into BME, and as along as you complete the Calc/Physics sequence your freshman year, then you’re good to go.

Your schedule will look exactly the same as it would if you were a declared BME major; don’t worry about it, and congrats!

Chris

alright thanks! yeah i didnt take the SAT but the ACT and i took am taking all the other courses

Study your *** off for your Physics, Calc, and intro to BME classes your first semester (and 2nd obviously). I applied to SBU undecided and decided on CME after getting here. I was just accepted into the program after having completed my first semester of Physics, Calc, and my intro to CME class. It will basically be the same for you. Make sure to go meet with the advisor of the department when you arrive. They like it when you are proactive. If you do well enough, you might even get in after your first semester as well.

Could u tell me more about CME? I confused…Is easy to get a job with CME degree?

I would say its easier to get a job with a chemical engineering degree as opposed to biomedical engineering. Biomedical is really specialized and I have heard from my BME friends that it is difficult to get a job especially without a graduate degree. Chemical engineering is a really broad field and much easier to get a job. It would be difficult with both degrees at Stony Brook because there are rarely any BME or CME companies at the job fairs. You would be on your own there.
