Our son just got the good news from a top 30 university that he has been accepted as a transfer from a small, non-elite LAC. However, now he's telling me that his grades are going to take a hit this semester, and he's worried about a possible revocation.

His GPA after three semesters was about a 3.7; this semester he thinks he's looking at at least one C, possibly two, with the best grade probably an A-. He'll be around 3.0 for the semester, at best.

He has always had a tendency to bite off more than he can chew--he was taking three upper-level math courses and two physics courses. (He's a math major.)

What do you think? Is he in trouble? On the bubble? OK?

I doubt he’s in trouble as long as he passes all his classes. Tell him to call the college and ask their policy for rescinding transfer admission. That will hopefully put his mind at ease and help him to concentrate on finishing up his coursework.

Just figured I’d follow up on this–his final term report included three C’s (one of them a C-minus), and sure enough, he was rescinded. On top of that, two months have now passed since the rescission letter and the university in question has not gotten around to removing him from their admitted student database, so we’re still getting letters telling us how excited we should be about orientation weekend, et cetera. Talk about twisting the knife…

Sorry to hear that.

Did your S ever talk to the school about how he could make up the classes, be on probation, etc. in order to avoid being rescinded?

They asked him for a letter of explanation, but evidently it didn’t do the trick. Which wasn’t surprising, really–I think they were looking for major illness, death in the family, or other cataclysmic, seriously discombobulating kinds of things. There was nothing like that going on with our son. Just typical life stuff, which he didn’t handle very well. I think he learned a lot from it, and I think he did a decent job of explaining what he learned in the letter, but it wasn’t enough.
