Does Kenyon require applicants to have taken 3 or more years of a language in high school? Is this absolutely mandatory?

Let me clarify: I took two years of a language, but dropped it junior year to make time for other classes. As a senior, I wouldn’t even have room in my schedule to take the AP classes I’m taking and a language. Do they take that into consideration?

Hi Annie,

It’s been a few years for me, but the way I believe it works is that it is not an admission requirement, but a graduation requirement. If admitted and you decide to attend, I believe you will need to take a year of language at Kenyon in order to graduate if you have not taken 3 years of a language in high school.

Three years of language or more is generally considered part of a rigorous curriculum including a minimum of 5 academic solid courses. However, if the language was replaced with an equally or more rigorous course, it will likely not hurt you in the admission process.

However, I must stress that you should not take my word, things may have changed. Your best bet is to get in touch with the Office of Admissions. They are very nice and I’m sure they will be more than happy to clarify this for you!
