I'm the mother of a high school sophmore, so maybe I'm jumping the gun, but I'm curious. If my daughter intends on majoring in Geology, which is officially at Pomona not Scripps, is this going to sound like she isn't interested in being at Scripps? In other words, are they going to look at her and ask why she didn't just apply to Pomona? Or is this just par for the course? There are plenty of reasons why she's a better fit for Scripps.

“is this going to sound like she isn’t interested in being at Scripps?”

No, not at all! One of my Scripps neighbors last year was majoring in geology, though I’m not sure if she knew that before applying to college. There are a lot of chances on the app for your daughter to outline why Scripps specifically appeals to her, and the intended field of study is rarely a concern to the folks at admissions, because students change their minds ALL the time.

My D, now a sophomore at Scripps, knew right from the beginning that she would major in Theatre at Pomona. She stated this on her application and sent in an artistic portfolio to the head of the Theatre dept. at Pomona. I have no way to know for sure, but I think the fact that she had a focused area of study may have even helped her. On her acceptance letter, the then head of Scripps Admission wrote a personal note stating what a lovely application she had put together. This is my long way of saying that wanting to have a major at another school will not hurt your daughter at all as long as she really wants to attend Scripps and it is not just that she thinks she cannot get into Pomona. Good luck!

Thanks so much. That’s what I was hoping to hear. It sounds like such a great school.
