During my freshman and sophomore years of high school I screwed around and got terrible grades. My junior and senior years I got serious and managed to get a 4.0 both years.

I got admitted to university provisionally because I had some classes to retake because I got Ds my first 2 years. I tried making them up through an online credit recovery program my school offers but I ended up one class short. I doubt they'll overlook that D so I'm pretty sure my admission will be revoked.

What should I do now? Should I make up that class over summer and apply for the spring term at a different school or should I just go to a community college first and apply as a transfer in 2 years?

Depending on your college, it may be too late to “make up” those classes. You should inform your college of this. They may not drop you at all. Who knows.

Call them. They may forgive the D freshman year, or allow you to make it up through summer school.
Just in case, look at the list of schools that miscalculated yield and are still taking applications. There are quite a few good schools on this list (Beloit, Hendrix, Wheaton-MA…) Prepare to send a few app (commonapp)

I already checked. All classes must be completed by the end of the spring term. They won’t accept anything I do over summer. Unless someone screws up their paperwork I’m not getting admitted.

What does your college counselor say about this?

Call the admissions office and ask what you could do to secure a spot in the freshman class. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

Would they accept an equivalency exam such as CLEP?
Call and ask, can’t hurt…
And start on these applications mentioned above (Hendrix, Beloit, Hiram, etc).

the people that can answer your question are not on some online forum, they work in admissions at the college in question.

Call the school now! Maybe you can make up the class this summer and still attend in the fall.

Like I said before, I’ve already asked and they said that nothing I do over summer will be considered.

I’m asking what I should do to get into university later. Would it be better to make up the classes and apply for the spring term somewhere else or to go to CC for 2 years then transfer?

Have you called and asked about CLEP credit? (taken BEFORE the summer)

What strategy you choose depends on the universities you’re aiming for:
if they’re private, you should make up the class and apply as a freshman to benefit from maximum financial aid;
if they’re instate public, attend community college (check how many credits are required to graduate, check about transfer requirements, choose one that has excellent transfer rates)

If you are thinking of spring admission check to see if the colleges you have in mind are actually accepting spring applicants. Some have general statements that they “may” accept them, but when you look at the website they say that for this year they are not. Also look carefully at the rules to make sure you are still going to be considered a freshman applicant. At some colleges, for example all the UC schools in CA, if you take even 1 CC class at any time other than summer right after graduating HS then you are considered a xfer student.

As for “better”, that’s a personal decision. The experience, cost, and opportunities are definitely different on the 2 paths and you have to figure out which is the right choice for you.

I’m not sure how relevant this is but I live in California if that makes a difference somehow.

The school I got into was a CSU.

If you don’t retake the HS class and reapply for Spring, you’ll have to take Community College classes for 2 years. Would you rather take the one class through summer school (and get an A) then apply to the same CSU (or others, since presumably your GPA would be better from making up that D and you’d have time to retake the SAT!) OR start college right away even if it means commuting and not doing the whole “college experience”, do 2 years straight at CC then finish at a CSU for the last 2 years?

I’m a bit conflicted. If I apply for the spring semester then I get to go to university sooner and have the “college experience”. On the other hand, if spend 2 years at CC and do well enough then I can pretty much erase my high school GPA and have a shot at some upper tier UCs that I couldn’t get accepted to straight out of high school.

I’d like to go to university as soon as I can but the opportunity to potentially get into top tier schools like Berkeley, Davis, UCLA, or UCSD is also very appealing.

I so strongly suggest you attend CC. I had a 1.84 GPA in HS, and I am off to UCSD in the fall. I am a member of PTK and I see my peers going off to UC Berkeley, UCLA and Stanford. Heck with the “college experience” that lasts a year or two, where you graduate from stays with you for life.

I think I’ll go with the CC option. In the end the whole point of university is to learn so I should take the opportunity to graduate from a better school over the “college experience”. I’ve always dreamed of going to Stanford for graduate study so going to a top tier UC will probably give me a better chance of making that a reality.
