Admission Status Changed !

Undergraduate Application (Part II, Fall 2011)
We have completed a preliminary review of your application. We sometimes request additional information (senior-year grades, for example), so be sure to watch the mail. You may submit senior year grades at www.usc.edu/midyeargrades, even if we did not specifically request them. We are continuing to review applications and expect to mail notification of a decision by April 1st.

What does a preliminary review mean? Does this mean that they are missing nothing from me?

Also I dont Remember… Was paying the application fee an option immediately after you submit using credit card? Or was there a wait period where I had to pay later?

My status changed today too. I posted the information about it on the “Application Status Question” thread. It went from …

“We have received and are currently reviewing your application. We recommend you check here occasionally for an update on the status of your application.”
which it’s said since Nov 2, to this …

“Your application is being reviewed by the admission committee. We will mail notification of their decision by April 1. If for some reason you don’t receive our written notice, we will be happy to provide the results over the phone beginning April 11th.”

“Also I dont Remember… Was paying the application fee an option immediately after you submit using credit card? Or was there a wait period where I had to pay later?”

You pay the application fee when you submit the application.

There was the same topic last year… generally, these admission status changes mean nothing. Don’t read too deep into them

yeah, I just read the last couple of years of “status” threads. It looks like we should be prepared for our status to change multiple times, usually not meaning anything definitive. Various status updates might also say things like “reviewed,” “forwarded to committee,” “acted on,” … I think it’s going to be a long waiting game :)

Does anyone else think that A sounds worse than B? It sure does to me, since they both started from the same point.

A. We have completed a preliminary review of your application. We sometimes request additional information…,We are continuing to review applications and expect to mail notification of a decision by April 1st.

B. “Your application is being reviewed by the admission committee. We will mail notification of their decision by April 1”

Some folks speculated last year that these messages are automatically updated as your application file moves through the admissions process. In other words, when all your docs are complete you get one message (no one has figured out which one that is), and when they are forwarded to your regional admission rep another message appears. If they get forwarded to your major/School, another message and so on. In addition, there are many cases when the messages get screwed up. So while the messages may mean something, it’s most likely having to do with their electronic file system and they are not important distinctions that anyone can tell–nor do they predict any outcome or committee reaction at this point.

Closer to the date when they begin notifying students, there can be a correlation between the timing of the last updated message and receiving an envelope–but that’s a ways off.

FWIW, 3 years ago my S had no updates at ALL. None. They just reported the date they received his application. Weeks went by, nothing–and others were reporting changes in messages. The result? He was accepted at the end of January and got the Trustee. Happy ending. But no hints or clues.

^D didn’t have any updates either…until just one, the “acted upon”. We didn’t know what that meant at the time, but 2 days later, also in January, D received the acceptance in the mail…and ultimately also the Trustee.
Maybe the updates depend entirely on which regional admissions person one has.

My application status changed to “We have completed a preliminary review of your application…” too. My application is still incomplete because my counselor has yet to submit my transcript and recommendation, so maybe they give you that message if your application is missing something?

Wait, those who applied by December 1st receive the admissions decision from USC in late january?!

musicbiochem…not exactly, only those who may be considered for the Trustee or Pres scholarships will receive decisions in late January or early February. That’s because the interviews take place in late Feb and early March.
Acceptances will continue in waves throughout mid/later February to late March, including those who applied by Dec 1. Rejections are sent out last, in early/mid April.

Oh damn, so if you don’t hear from USC and its April, then you basically are out of it? haha. Wow thats unfortunate
