Admission to HCI Masters programs

Hello, I would like to have some input from anyone who is familiar with what it takes to get into a master's program in human computer interaction. I am currently working in the software development field, however my undergraduate record is not impressive (gpa was below 3.0), and I did not form any relations with professors to get recommendations from. At this point, is the only option for me to design something HCI related on my own as a portfolio item and then apply? Or do I basically have no chance due to my undergraduate record? I am willing to move anywhere within the continental U.S.
Thank you.

There is no need that you have to prepare a HCI portfolio to apply for the HCI program. In my opinion, the solid background or related work/study experiences at CS is ok. If you have some experiences in the field of HCI, that’s better.
