Does anyone recommend using these types of program? It's where you pay big money to send your kid to an admissions guru for 5 days and they counsel them on school selection, resume building, interviewing skills, common app and supplemental app essay, etc. There's one here in NJ and I was just wondering if it's worth the $?

I can’t imagine spending any money, let alone * big money * to have a stranger talk to my kid for five days about the college application process.

Yes, the college application process is not that easy—particularly if you’re a top-notch student aiming at a tippy-top college. But there’s ample * free * information around: Here at CC; your high school’s guidance office; college web sites; the College Board web site; the various college reviews and guidebooks, etc.

You can do all the research you need on this website and others around the web. “Admissions boot camp”? I’ve never heard of such a thing. My high school offers SAT Boot Camp, but not “Admissions boot camp.”

If it’s the process that seems daunting, just post a thread on here with your queries and you’ll be assisted. You can call whatever school your kid is applying to if you have specific questions about that school. But you definitely don’t need to send him/her to boot camp. :D

Well, one of the teacher’s mom runs a one-day “boot camp” for college admissions, and I believe she’s paid around the ballpark of $75/hour by the school and anyone who’s a senior is allowed to attend. Could you see if there’s such a thing in your area, where you could do something with a group?
