My S got his honors acceptance email last night too. I posted his stats here yesterday if anyone is interested. I did email someone at admissions yesterday, and they said just because you qualify for Maximus merit scholarship, doesn’t mean you’ll get it, they run out of money before they can give it to everyone who qualifies, and likely the lesser merit scholarships will not be notified until you get your complete financial package in late February / early March.
Thank you for that info, my D has same stats as your S, fingers and toes crossed!!
They have a new strategy this year. Regarding the merit scholarships, review the EA potential scholarship potential with the FAFSA concurrently. Give the scholarships to those who need the financial support, not necessarily the merit? As an OOS we have been waiting and hearing different eta’s since December (phone and email)? Someone from OSU please explain all of this?
If what CRVKids is saying above is, indeed, true, I doth protest. For many of us, a merit scholarship is the ONLY scholarship our kid is eligible for. For those of us in state who have been paying taxes for decades, that’s a real kick in the teeth. Why should the OOS kids get all the merit money?? D applied to Indiana U too, and even with max merit aid and SSA, it will still be quite a bit more than in state tuition. That’s the way it is.
So if you didn’t fill out a FAFSA cause you know you won’t qualify for need based financial aid, now OSU won’t give you a merit scholarship because you “don’t need the money”? Outrageous!! A merit aid is just that- Not Need Based!!! It’s based on hard work and brains!
This is from the OSU website:
Below is a description of the university’s merit scholarships for the incoming freshman class of 2017. For most awards, we consider academic achievement only. For others, financial need is also considered. International freshmen are not eligible for merit scholarships.
@CRVKids where did you hear they are using financial need as a consideration for merit scholarship awards?
They aren’t. Our EFC is well above tOSU OOS price tag (I filed FAFSA with them) yet my D received National Buckeye and Maximus, was invited to apply for alum scholarships, and was given a $500 travel grant to visit.
S got his honors acceptance email last night. Super excited!
I apologize. This is my first child. It’s only a theory. I’m frustrated. Reading how things went with EA in the previous years in CC got me excited for naught.
I also believe CRVKids is wrong. I know the valedictorian in our high school got the Maximus scholarship, and they do not qualify for any need based aid.
I think we all just need to calm down, myself included. We are all sweating the merit scholarships because of the huge cost of college today. It is just frustrating when some seem to find out earlier than others. The method of communication from OSU this year is aggravating. I kinda wish all EA applicants would find out about Honors and Merit Scholarships at the exact same release time. It was the same with the “waves” of acceptances.
I do not think this theory is true. My family qualifies for no need based aid, but I received the Maximus and National Buckeye a few weeks ago, and I am very grateful. If all merit were based on need, I would have no way of affording OSU. So for those of you who are worried, your financial need shouldn’t determine your merit. Just be patient. I know it’s annoying and stressful, but all the info will come eventually. Hang in there
I called admissions last week and was told all of the buckeye/Maximus scholarships had been sent out. Contacted them again today and they said they have not all been sent out yet. They will continue to come out along with provost and trustees through Feb and early March.
@itsgettingreal17 How did you get the $500 to visit? We do qualify for pell-grant level aid on FaffAFSA and my child got the Maximus/Buckeye/Honors letters a while back, but we can’t visit because of cost unless child is invited to the Eminence Weekend. (It would cost around $900+ for the cheapest version of getting two people to OSU from where we live) I am just wondering if it is worth-while to email asking if there are any funds available to visit rather than waiting on the off-chance of an Eminence invite.
make that FAFSA! sorry
@sursumcorda I’ll PM you.
First deferral received from OSU
Accepted!!!
My son received the Maximus a few weeks ago but no decision on Honors which really doesn’t make sense. He is also appointed to USMA and has received full tuition plus partial living to several other universities. Still holding out a sliver of hope for Morrill but not looking positive. We are in state.
@love4monsters You or your son should call the Honors office directly and inquire and restate your son’s strong interest in the Honors Program. That’s what I did a few years ago when my son did not hear back in the first or second wave of honor email/invites. They will record his interest and it may help if he is borderline. Coincidentally or not within a week of my phone call my son received the email inviting him to honors.
