I am still waiting for my decision
I’m an international student though
And I’m getting more and more frantic day by day ;-;
I have some concerns after seeing some of the stats of kids being rejected.
my D was accepted has very good grades but struggled with the standardized testing. She did very well in HS but worked like crazy - homework for hours and most weekends. OSU is the highest rank school she got accepted to and now I wonder if she would struggle there- or is it just competitive to get into all these schools, and then most are academically the same once you attend??? Would love your thoughts - she was choosing between Pitt (no merit) and Towson (with a lot of merit$) and now OSU. thanks
@osuprof I know that in 2015 more or just about all students were admitted from the waitlist. Do you know the amount admitted from the 2016 waitlist? Please, your info is most insightful and appreciated!
Unfortunately, no one on the wait list was accepted last year 2016…
That’s what we heard for last year
wondering which is better waitlisted or accepted at a branch campus??? do any waitlisted kids have acceptance at branch also?
@oscarmom1 So were they then offered branch campus?
Rejected with a 1430 SAT and 3.4 GPA, varsity athlete, theater, EC’s.
Accepted at Penn State, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Rutgers
Very surprised, SAT is in Top 25% of Admitted Students
@osumom33 you can apply regional campus or wait for final decision. Good luck.
Rejected with 33 ACT 740 Math 2 720 Chemistry and 39/45 IB Predicted. Not exactly sure about GPA but should be somewhere in between 3.75 and 3.85 UW.
Not sure if this counts as legacy, but my Dad did his MBA here as well.
What the actual hell?
Everyone please keep in mind that they look at more than just academics and test scores and similar things when admitting students! I think OSU has done a lot more over the years in terms of truly doing a holistic review process–I have friends who had amazing scores who either didn’t get in or chose not to go. But you all will do GREAT at all of the other great schools you got into!! Please keep your heads up!
@hsgradco2017, the people posting here are telling you they scored in the Top 3-4% of the NATION on the SAT or ACT. This isn’t an Ivy League school we are discussing, or Duke, Cal Tech or Stanford. When you see people getting accepted with vastly lower stats it makes you wonder what’s going on at OSU Admissions.
ACT: 33, UWGPA: 3.8 and OSU says no?!?!
I’m sure that poster and others have great options for college, those stats play well almost anywhere.
I was accepted at Penn State, Syracuse, Virginia Tech and others so no problems, however, the OSU rejection was puzzling
@oliver17, A perfect 36 ACT score and a National Merit SF and was rejected. I missed the news when OSU became the latest member to the Ivy League.
huh… that’s odd that people with such high gpas and scores are being rejected?
maybe yield protection?
Maybe those candidates aren’t as well rounded as other candidates or maybe their essays weren’t great. Everyone on here says they have great stats, essays, letter of recommendation etc but who really knows how they stack up against other applicants. It’s easy to slam OSU because you didn’t get in with a high ACT score but maybe others are just better suited to what the school looks for in a student.
So, I have a less comforting explanation of what has happened with some candidates.
First, OSU is trying to have a class that is about 12% smaller this year than the one from last year, primarily driven by housing constraints. In the process, they have kept targets for different majors. Then they went through the applications in a certain order. If they had met the target before they got to your application, you were out of luck.
They seemed to have done some yield protection also.
Finally, one thing to remember is that OSU heavily class rank (top 10%, 10-25%, and not in top 25%) in addition to ACT/SAT scores. Unhooked candidates not in top 10% need higher scores, and it is almost impossible if you are not in top 25%. Last year 63% were in top 10% and 95% in top 25%.
OSU has been getting harder to get into each year. Last year the average ACT scores were 29.2 and a 31 for more competitive branches such as engineering. This is a big jump from 5 years ago where average ACT was around 27. Still, someone with a 33 ACT is easily qualified enough to attend as long as there are no problems with the other parts of the application.
@osuprof Thank you for responding with a more detailed explanation versus the nonsense some people on here are posting. Perfect ACT’s and 3.8 GPA’s are well above the 50% range of admitted students to OSU. Therefore other factors must be at hand and you noted a few in your knowledgeable post. Thanks again for the insight.
@osuprof What do you mean by certain order? I submitted my app well before all of my friends but for some reason they chose to review my application after everyone else. I have better a GPA, same ACT and take better classes than them and I have better leadership position. Yet, they put me in the waitlist and accept them. Can you answer that?
@dantheman772 Did you apply to the same major as all of your friends?
