Admissions Discussion/Decisions - Class of 2023

I just checked on my status, and it has moved from “Evaluating” to “Applicant”. What does this mean? If I click on it, it says “We have begun processing your application. Please check back at a later date for a status update.”

@DocJake I wish I could help, but can only contribute ours has not changed.

What time do they usually release decisions?

My application still says it’s under evaluation.

mine still says evaluation as well, but going off the description you gave, it sounds like evaluation would be the step after applicant? Has anyone else’s changed?

My status is “Evaluation” which is what it has always been…

@equationlover @heading2college7 As a parent with a son currently attending and having followed admissions from my son’s high school and also decisions posted on the Ohio state College Confidential admissions thread closely over past 4 years, choice of major and school applied to (college of engineering, arts and sciences, Fisher college of business, etc…) absolutely has an effect on admissions chances and also how quickly you might hear back. College of engineering is the most difficult, then Fisher direct admit, then arts and sciences, just as an example. Direct admit to Engineering is most competitive and higher stats are needed. And within arts and sciences, for example, higher stats are needed for more popular and/or competitive majors. The admissions office looks for a diverse and well rounded class. They don’t necessarily want all well rounded students. But by picking students who excel or stand out in specific academic areas, they can build a class that is well rounded. If 1000 applicants list neuroscience as intended major versus only a few applicants list geology as intended major, it will be more competitive to get admitted as neuroscience because Admissions wants a well rounded diverse class, so they can afford to be more selective for the more in-demand majors or programs. And as a general rule, the applicants with the best stats and highest application rating (based on the Admissons office weighting of all the holistic factors they look at in evaluating a candidate, as posted on its website) who have applied before the Nov 1 deadline (with all supporting materials submitted and received by Admissons before Nov 1) will receive their admissons notifications first, likely tomorrow late afternoon into evening hours, as has been the practice in past several years. Best of luck everybody!

@trackmbe3 thanks, didn’t know that
@DocJake I just checked and “applicant” status means they had to go back and reprocess your application
@equationlover in the past years it has been after 3:30 ish pm est and they go into the night

Good luck to everyone tomorrow! Be sure to list stats and stuff if you hear back.

@heading2college7 thanks for checking! I guess this can’t be anything good ? I guess the silver lining is that I (hopefully) won’t get rejected tomorrow.

I don’t think that direct admit is the only option. I see what you are saying, but most applicants aren’t direct admit into their major. The majority of engineering students are pre-majors I think. OSU isn’t Umich in the fact that it doesn’t factor in major pool for stat decisions. It makes sense that they break down intended major for a more diverse class, though. @trackmbe3

This is all based off what I have read.

@equationlover i thought the same thing. I don’t think any engineers get direct admit, but some might for business

I really hope that I get a decision, today… unfortunately, I submitted mine on the 31st

From what I’ve read in this thread it seems that it’s not necessarily first come first serve or based on academics. No clue the validity but it’s mainly from students or parents who have had or had a child go through so seems credible enough. @ScrubStudent

Good luck guys! I’ve got good stats and live in Ohio but this is still nervewracking for some reason lol

We are waiting to hear as well. Ds applied two years ago to the College of Engineering (CS). He was homeschooled and had a 34 ACT and was a NMF, 10 AP classes, swimming and debate were his main extracurriculars, with a decent amount of service hours. He heard of his acceptance the Friday before Thanksgiving in the late afternoon. Dd has applied to Fisher with a 31 ACT, 6 AP classes, swimming and forensics as her main extracurriculars (placing at several regional tournaments). We will see. Good luck to all! But remember that if you don’t hear today it does not mean you will not get in. There will be MANY students admitted after today.

At what time would you expect that decisions will begin releasing, today? Will we get emails or need to check the portal?

Most likely sometime between 3 and 5 pm and then throughout the rest of the evening. I would check the portal before waiting for an email…

someone said earlier that the portal updates first and the email comes a few days later, so just keep refreshing the portal between 3 - 10 est @ScrubStudent @gccollege
