Admissions Essay B

Many students expand their view of the world during their time in college. Such growth often results from encounters between students who have lived different cultural, economic, or academic experiences. With your future growth in mind, describe a potential classmate that you believe you could learn from either within or outside a formal classroom environment.

I am so confused by this topic. Does anyone have a sample essay I can look at so I have an idea of how to approach this essay. What a random topic. I am so stupified.

collegebound, what i did last year was to think of three flaws in my personality. then i wrote about how i would grow and learn and other BS from a peer who would be strong in those three fields i was weak in.

help any?

I said an international student and someone who is disadvantaged and had a rough upbringing. International- because, I grew up in America and alll I know is American culture and customs and American media, law, morals, etc. and that an international student would bring a completely different perspective.
Disadvantaged and rough upbringing- because I have had a great upbringing and couldnt ask for a better life. Basically I said i am spoiled and that so is anyone who gets to grow up in america in a two parent household. So if i met someone disadvantaged it would make me appreciate life and stop taking it for granted.

Can I bump this please?

you just did

Collegebound,

I'm not going to offer any essay advice because it's been 30 years since I wrote one (and they did have them then), but I don't think this is a random topic. I think this essay question asks you to describe a person you would like to meet at college or what kind of person could you meet that would expand your horizons.

What if I told you that you would be going to college with only the people you went to high school with? Can you imagine what college would be like if you transplanted your high school classmates to a college campus? Basically, your college would be a lot like your high school. College is different from high school for lots of reasons, but one of the main reasons a college like UT is different is because it has a variety of students who bring different knowledge, attitudes and experiences to campus.

what a great essay question

It's a horrible question.

And what's worse is that they make people who get in automatically write essays that they don't have any reason to read.

We recently met with an admissions advisor at the business school and he said that UT is considering changing essay B. He told my son to go ahead and write essay A, but to wait until September 1 when the 2007 app comes out before starting on B. He said there was alot of discussion about it and he was not sure if the outcome will be a new topic or not. I got the impression that he and other admissions counselors are not too crazy about the topic. He mentioned the PC comment and that the essays may not be truly reflective of people's true feelings.

So this classmate is supposed to be a fictitious character that you would LIKE to meet, rather than a sneaky way of describing yourself or another real person?

I'm glad they might change the topic. I find it confusing.

^Geez that's what I was thinking about writing about but I figured everyone and their mom would be writing the same thing. Aghhh I hope they do change the topic! Only because if they don't they're gonna get like thousands of the same essay.

Barren - Don't you know moms aren't supposed to be writing admission essays! ;)

And yes, the essay you were planning on writing is basically the same as the one my older son wrote 2 years ago when he was applying(except for the international part). I'm sure that is the standard party line...
