Admissions for student from school without a lot of AP classes.

Hi, I was just wondering if anybody has any input on my situation. I'm currently at a school which only offers 7 AP classes. I have already taken 1 available plus 1 online AP class. I plan on taking the rest of the six AP classes over the next 2 years. I've read posts about kids who are taking more AP classes in one year than my school even offers. My question is weather I can even compete even though I think I've done my best given my situation. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You will not be expected to take AP classes if your school doesn’t offer them. In fact, you’ll mostly be judged based on the context of your high school and how you took advantage of the resources available to you. You can self-study for AP exams, of course, and if you get a 4 or 5 it’s as good as taking the class itself.

Maybe it’ll you feel better to learn that my school only offers eight, and students are only allowed to take them in their senior year after completing the entire regular high school curriculum:( And people do make it to very selective colleges… well, occasionally.

SELF STUDY

Anyways, my school only offers 2 AP classes, and one is labeled as “pre” AP, just to make life worse. So, I am going to self-study 7. It really is fun and easy to do, especially if you love the subject (again, I’m talking social sciences here), so just do what you want and if you feel your school doesn’t accurately prepare you, then DIY it.

As Calico says, you will be evaluated within the context of what your school offers. With the schedule that you described, your GC will be able to report that you took the most rigorous schedule available. That’s what matters, not the number of APs that other applicants took.

If you want to go a step further and take CC courses or self-study APs, that’s icing on the cake.

As other said, if you utilize the opportunities available you’ll do fine. You’ll have taken all the AP classes, and challenging classes your school has to offer. This is EXACTLY what admissions is looking for.

You can “self study” other APs, however, that may not be worth it unless you can handle the additional stress and if you desire to go the extra mile in a subject you know you can do well in. Don’t worry, you’ll be fine! :)

Thanks guys i appreciate the help

yeahbuddy, my son’s high school offers no AP classes. He got into his first-choice (top 15) college with no problems. It’s important that your high school counselor can check the box saying you’ve taken the “most rigorous curriculum available.” But no, you will not be at a disadvantage if your school offers fewer AP classes than other schools.
