Admissions Lady on the Phone was Mean to me.

Curious about why my admission type hasn't switched from Regular to Priority in over a month, I called the UIUC admissions office to ask about it today.
When the woman answered the phone, I told her that I had a question regarding the status of my application, and she asked for my U ID number. I told her that I didn't know it, and she irritatedly said "Excuse me?" I again said that I didn't have it. She asked "Why?" and I said because I wasn't aware that it was needed to check status over the phone.
Then she got all pis*ed off and said "Well, if you'd actually read the conformation email we sent you after you submitted your application, you'd have know that you must have it, wouldn't you?"

Then it was like 3-5 seconds of awkward silence and she asked for my name, which I regrettingly told her.

After I asked my question she acted like it was a really stupid question, and she again used another "well, if you looked online you'd know that _____, but you didn't."

Will the fact that she got angry with me effect my chances? Do you think she typed up a note about how I failed to follow directions?

O.M.Goodness
I was just about to ask the same question here because I too called the admission office today and the lady got ****ed off with me. I was wondering if she would remember my name and that might hurt my chances…

Haha I got into a pretty heated argument with that lady, she treated me like I was 5 yrs old and knew nothing about college even though I had a valid question that actually turned out to be the universities mistake. I got in though so don’t worry. My stats were nothing outstanding

I got a guy when I called. He was nice.

hahahahah it looks like she’s earned herself a reputation. She scared the living hell out of me.

I would guess that the people making big decisions about your application are not the same people who answer the phones. I also doubt that a woman who is clearly frustrated at her job/the redundancy of people’s questions would go out of her way to make a note to the “decision makers” about you.

Further, if you are a qualified applicant and clearly deserve to be admitted, I don’t think they would have the guts to reject you simply because of their negative publicity in that area as of late.

So basically… chill.

Also this might be relevant. An adcom posted this blog yesterday answering some common questions/concerns that people are having regarding the priority deadline and application in general.

To answer the OP’s problem:

Good question, perhaps she asked your name to look up your application etc…

The phone conversation you had was with admission staff who make no admissions decisons or recommendations (or notes to file) and will have no effect one way or the other on the admission decison (unless of course she seeks revenge and deletes you from the system). Staff are supposed to be courteous but right now they are getting a lot of calls a day like yours and sometimes react poorly.

Dude yes! I contacted the admissions office about a week ago and that lady sparked an attitude with me because I asked if there was a counselor form. I was also worried that she’d write my name down or something. She told me that it was obvious that I didn’t read the application instructions properly.

She herself moved UIUC down about two places on my interest list. I don’t appreciate being treated like crap for trying to be responsible.

Haha, I will continue the stories.

I called her the other day about the whole transcript mail sorting out thing and she bitterly told me that it wold take her hours to find my transcripts in the thousands upon thousands of envelopes they’ve been receiving this past week.

Did you tell her you’d be glad to wait?

Judging by your username, you go to the University of Michigan. Therefore, your stats WERE something outstanding.
