I'm currently a senior and looking at the University of Maryland.

My stats are:
SAT 1370/1600 2070/2400
Two AP's, both 5's.
Stellar rec's.
About 5-6 EC's, a decent amount of volunteer work
GPA unweighted 3.86

I'm interested in finding out about admissions but most especially MERIT aid...I wouldn't qualify for financial but I really need merit. So does anybody know stats to get the scholarships?

Oh....and what are your favorite/least favorite things about this school?

Favorite things:
-Holds the distinction of the only school to consistently make the top 20 party school list and the top 20 academic school list…Basically we know what we’re doing
-99.9% of the people you will meet here are really chill, even when drunk. If you meet someone who’s not, you can bet money they’re visiting from another school.
-It’s like living in a mid-sized town almost completely populated by people between 18 and 22.
-Maryland has decided to tend away from rules that make kids really scared to be caught drunk and move towards ones that make sure we know how to do it safely, and that no one dies from alcohol poisoning.
-No matter who you are or what you like, you will find friends here. It may seem like it’s taking a while at first, because of the size, but eventually it happens.
-more and more things that I will think of after I post.

Least favorite-
-Department of Transportation Services-DOTS–parking, buses, more parking. Horrible. And they’re raking in the money.
-The dorms don’t all have air conditioning
-So many hills…
-The internet connection slows to almost nothing between about 9 and midnight. There is rumored to be a faster network umd-secure, but even my friend who works for OIT can’t get a Mac or Linux run computer on it.

I would say you are in, BUT UMDCP is notorious for low FA amounts compared to other schools. I don’t see anything more in Merit for you than 2-5K a yr. Our DS same gpa, higher SAT, and more AP’s, plus jump start and he got merit in that range. UMiami Fl offered him 100K in merit. and NYU offered him @50 (I think), he was OOS for all of these schools.

I can’t access the umd-secure network either (I have a Mac). I followed all the instructions on the OIT website to connect to it, but it’s yet to work. I have an ethernet cable though so for secure stuff I use that.

LauraG - There was a thread from last spring here that would give you a good idea of $ awarded vs stats. I’ll give the thread a bump.
Good luck!
