I am a high school senior applying ED1 this year. I have a 3.07 GPA and I am not submitting test scores. I have gone to a ton of virtual events, done a group interview, and i participated in the community of scholars program where I earned AU credit and an A in my course. I want to apply as either a journalism or political science major, but I don’t know which one is easiest to get into or if it makes no difference. AU is my dream school, and I have experience as an editor forbtwo school papers, 60 volunteer hours, and several publications of my journalism work. What do you think my chances are? I enrolled in two AP courses this year, as well as one honors one. I am also taking a law course at my nearby community college. What else do you suggest I do during the next 2-3 months? PS. I am not applying for any financial aid if that helps or does not help. I hope to be at AU next fall, thank you for your suggestions!
As you probably know, your GPA puts you lower than 90% of admitted students. So it is a very very long shot. And not sending test scores only hurts your odds.
I’d suggest you put all your effort now into realistic schools for your stats. When you have a solid list of those schools researched and apps complete, then sure, throw a Hail Mary for AU.
Going off of the poster above, it’s a reach with your GPA. You’d need an amazing test score to make it a match school.
Going off that, you’re applying for one of the two more popular majors at AU. While its arguably harder to get in as a political science major, journalism is still one of the harder programs to get into. You’d have a better chance going in undecided. Luckily, AU is need-aware, so not applying for financial aid does help your chances, but barely. Your only hope at this point is to get good grades this year and hope your teachers write good recommendations.
