Admissions.

Does anyone know who long UF takes to give out their acceptances or denials? I applied about a month ago, and when I looked online it said: Your application for admission to the University of Florida for the Fall 2011 term has been received. Please allow 2-4 weeks for an initial review of your application. Updates to your application status and requests for missing materials will be posted here. Nothing was posted at all yet. I'm getting a little bit impatient because I need to know if I will get accepted or not. I can leave next semester to some other institution, but UF is my first choice. It would help if I knew when they usually send out their letters and what time-frame.

What type of admissions, freshman or transfer? Freshman admissions are given in February, I believe.

I am a transfer student. I will have my AA by this December.

You applied for fall 2011? If that’s correct I think you would be waiting for quite some time… I applied for fall 2010 in January 2010 and didn’t hear back til May.

Are you serious? That is a long time. Since I will not have my prerequisites done for my major until the end of summer, do you know if UF will automatically base their decision on that? I tried calling the office, but they weren’t so informative. They actually seemed kind of rude! It seemed as though they didn’t want to answer my questions.

Well I’m pretty sure they focus on freshman and Summer admissions first. I applied to CALS and they seemed to take longer to get back to people than some of the other colleges but even with the others I think most people had to wait til atleast end of march, april. It’s fine that your pre-reqs won’t be done til the end of summer as long as they will be done prior to the term you are applying for. I have heard of people getting accepted but having a condition of earning a certain grade in their in progress courses, esp if it’s a pre-req… but that seems to vary by person and college

Well I guess I will be waiting for a response for a while then. Do you have an idea on what gpa UF usually looks for in a transfer student? My major is Biology and since a lot of people are doing that I’m assuming they’re going to be more strict on my application. Are you attending UF right now?

I thought that too but I applied to CALS rather than CLAS (I’m also a bio major)… partially because CALS has the specialization I wanted (biotechnology) and also because I heard CALS accepts the highest # of transfer students over CLAS, but I’m not sure how true that is. I got in with a 3.5 overall, and got a C and a C+ in 2 of my pre-req courses so I don’t think they were very strict with my app at all, haha.

What is CALS and CLAS? I am not familiar with that. When I applied to UF, I chose the Biology Preprofessional route. I did not get any C’s in my classes and I have all As so far in my prereqs. I have a 3.65 overall, but I’m afraid that’s not good enough. How are you doing at UF, by the way? Is it that much tougher? Also, did you get in without all of your prereqs completed? I know for a fact, that I will not have physics or o chem done when I transfer. I am hoping to take those my first semester there. The other prereqs will be completed though.

CALS = college of agriculture and life sciences CLAS = college of liberal arts and sciences. Do you know which one you applied to? They both offer the pre-professional biology major. I think your standing will be good enough esp if you have all A’s in your pre-reqs. I finished ochem and physics before transferring bc I was originally doing pharmacy… and I honestly wanted to take those at CC rather than at UF. I hear ochem is a lot harder at UF, I had several class mates that had to retake it for whatever reason in my ochem classes who had already taken it at UF. I’m taking some 4000 level courses and some 2000 so it’s hard to really gauge how much “harder” it is

Well I thought the Ochem credits won’t even transfer if I took it at a community college. I applied to CALS. I can’t even take physics yet because I need to take calc first. Well I think it’s possible to take physics, but I don’t think that’s a good idea. Especially since I’m not taking calc 1 & 2 until the summer. Also, I am taking two maths and sciences next semester. Sticking another science class with lab isn’t going to do me any good. I’m acing general chem so far. I also aced intro chem last semester. What I noticed is that UF won’t know that I will have all these prereqs done until the end of summer. Am I supposed to contact them and let them know that? On my application it only asked the total courses in progress. I named all of them of course, but I won’t have chem II done till next semester and the maths done till summer.

Just keep up your grades and I’m pretty sure you’re going to get in. I’d agree to not try and shove any extra science courses in if you don’t need to, that only gives you a much higher chance of hurting one of your grades just by getting overwhelmed. That happens a lot, probably what will happen is if you get in you’ll have a condition on your acceptance letter that says you must complete all pre-req coursework prior to starting then you’ll just have to send your final transcripts over as soon as you’re done with those classes. If I were you I’d send your transcript again after your fall semester grades have been posted so they’ll have more to look at when reviewing your application.

I heard something about early admissions one time, is any of this true? February is far away. If I can get results faster, it’d be nice. I already submitted my app.

Alright thank you so much, I’ll do what you suggested! I really hope I get into UF!
