admitted asian applicant stats

malaysia :)

I'm from Vietnam, where English is just a foreign language studied in school (who cares about foreign language?). I had a very hard time studying English just to get 610s on writing and verbal. Science stuff is the only thing that drags me through.
I'm really impressed by your English score, I had thought that you were from England or Australia.
Philippinos, Singaporeans, Malaysians have lot of advantages over other South East Asians when it comes to English.
Very Impressive !!!

twitb,
english is practically a 1st language for me- have spoken it since i was bornn :) the minus side is although im technically malaysian chinese, i dont speak any chinese. the only other language i speak is malay, my national language,so that's pretty bad...lol. thanks btw.

u enrolling in berkeley this fall? or are u enrolled already?

I was kinda suprised not to see you list Chinese. Me? This Fall.

I'm Singaporean and my first language is English and Chinese is my second language. I took ten years of Chinese and don't speak a word of it. I understand a little bit of Malay and Bahasa Indonesia. We're in the same boat! :)

Where did you get this from? Is it published in the Common Data Set? If so, then show me the link.

It's one thing to show Asian pride; it's another to tell BS and lie. LOL! I've seen quite a few BS "stats" being thrown particularly on Berkeley's board. Go figure!

suzzie..yeah it's kinda embarassing. blush

Most people dont consider me Asian, I am half Chinese and half Irish, 6'2.5", pale, and more into the liberal arts, but my essay talked about my mother's side of my family, which is Asian. I went to an Asian dominated high school, it is kind of strange how even though im not fully white people would call me the white guy, now that I think about it.

I got like 1430 (770 v 660 m) and 760 history, 740 math iic, 700 writing, 4.0 UC GPA (like a 3.6 UW GPA), I was in a few clubs and was an assistant at UCSF for a summer, thats it really. I wrote great essays, I think.

I think affirmitive action should not be allowed in any public/governmental setting, like a public university. If there is a private university, I believe it should have the freedom to institute a progressive affirmitive action policy or a bigoted racist one.

Going to an Asian dominated high school and seeing the sheer number of not so intelligent people, mostly Asians, study their way to good grades and decent test scores would make me very inclined to consider essays, economic background, and the uniqueness or diversity of an applicant, or just if they come off as truly intelligent and not just a high achieving test taking machine more important than grades. I dont want to imply that all Asians are like that, but many are, thus the stereotype.

You know, this isnt Asia where university admissions are based solely on numbers. I don't think it should be like that.
