I receive this email saying "Congratulations! The Admissions committee has decided to recommend to our Dean of Graduate Studies that you be admitted to the XXX program. Now I must tell you that admissions is not final until you are notified by our Office of Graduate Studies."
May I know is there anything in my application that can affect the final decision? What is my chances of getting in???

99% or so. It’s usually only a formality, but apparently exceptions do occur.

I got the same thing with Michigan and UMass. I was confused too but it seems like a minor formality.

Congratulations! Change the world!

Just like departments in a university cannot hire a faculty member (only the chancellor or the president does), a graduate program cannot admit a student-only the graduate dean can (grad division).

On only the very rarest of occasions would the grad division decline a program’s recommended admits. However, knowing that the grad division could insures that programs do appropriate examine applicants and that programs only admit those with the credential requireds

It’s usually a formality. The only time I’ve ever heard of a graduate school blocking a dept recommendation is when there was a funding issue. Something like an international student was admitted to a PhD program and there was no proof he could pay and the grad school hadn’t come thru with funding yet. I know international students have to fill out additional forms saying they can pay if the grad school won’t pay before they can get a student visa…or something like that.
